Chapter 16 - ROBERT’S MONEY
Robert did not hide the payment.
When his attorney responded, he said it had been a loan to his mother.
Margaret.
That answered one question.
The twelve thousand dollars was not secretly stolen from the girls.
But why had he lent it?
His explanation was simple.
“Legal and family expenses.”
Leah requested clarification through the case.
Robert eventually agreed to speak voluntarily.
We met in a conference room with attorneys present.
He looked exhausted before he sat down.
“I thought Claire was losing control.”
“Based on what?” Leah asked.
“Mom showed me messages.”
The fake ones.
“She showed me photographs.”
The staged ones.
“She said Emma was begging to live with her.”
The coerced statement.
Everything came back to the same source.
Margaret.
Robert claimed he did not know about the iPad access.
He did not know the school signature was copied.
He did not know Emma had been forced to wash dishes for hours.
When Leah played the birthday video, his face changed.
“Stop.”
She stopped it.
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“She told me Emma had insisted on helping.”
I almost laughed.
Emma had supposedly insisted on helping while crying in pain.
Robert looked at me.
“I believed her.”
“You never called me.”
“I thought you’d lie.”
“Because she told you I would.”
He looked away.
That was the machinery of manipulation.
Margaret did not need everyone to be evil.
She needed them isolated from the person she was targeting.
Robert admitted the loan was partly intended to cover guardianship litigation.
That mattered.
But he denied any plan to control the girls’ accounts.
Then Leah showed him Margaret’s handwritten note.
Requested custodian change after emergency order.
Robert stared at it.
“I’ve never seen that.”
I watched him carefully.
He looked genuinely frightened.
“What did you think would happen if Margaret became guardian?” I asked.
“That she’d take care of the girls.”
“With what money?”
“She said Aaron left enough.”
There it was.
Margaret had told Robert the children’s money would cover their care.
Legitimate in theory.
Dangerous in her hands.
Leah explained that guardianship did not automatically give Margaret ownership of anything.
Robert looked embarrassed.
“I know that now.”
Then he said something none of us expected.
“Mom told me Claire had been withdrawing from the girls’ accounts for herself.”
I sat forward.
“What?”
“She showed me statements.”
I had never used one dollar for myself.
Robert emailed the documents.
Leah opened them.
The balances were wrong.
Several withdrawals did not exist in the bank’s real history.
The statements had been altered.
And at the top of each PDF was a file-creation tag.
