Chapter 8 - THE WITNESS LIST

Rebecca came to my house that evening.
I did not invite her inside until Emma said she was comfortable with it.
That was the new rule.
The girls came first.
Not family peace.
Not appearances.
Not Margaret’s feelings.
Rebecca sat at my dining table with both hands wrapped around a mug she never drank from.
“I’m not testifying against you.”
“You’re listed as her witness.”
“I told her weeks ago I would explain what I’d seen.”
“What did you see?”
She looked toward the hallway.
“Can Emma hear us?”
“She’s upstairs.”
Rebecca lowered her voice.
“I saw you miss school events.”
True.
“I saw Margaret pick the girls up constantly.”
True.
“I saw Emma doing chores.”
True.
“And I saw screenshots that made me think you were asking Margaret to discipline her.”
False evidence attached to true circumstances.
That was what made Margaret dangerous.
She had not invented a completely fictional version of my life.
She had taken every weakness I actually had and wrapped lies around it.
Rebecca began scrolling through old messages.
One from Margaret read:
Claire sent another short payment. I’m covering the difference again.
But I had my own bank record from that week.
I had sent an extra eight hundred dollars.
“Did she ever show you what I paid?”
“No.”
“Did anyone ask?”
Rebecca shook her head.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I wrote it down.
Then Rebecca showed me something important.
A photograph Margaret had sent her two months earlier.
Emma sat at Margaret’s kitchen table doing homework.
Beside her was my old silver iPad.
The screen was visible at an angle.
My email inbox was open.
There was the device.
There was Margaret’s possession of it.
There was a date.
Not proof she forged messages.
But setup connecting her to the access.
I forwarded the original image to Leah.
Rebecca whispered, “I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“That doesn’t fix it.”
“No.”
She flinched.
I wasn’t trying to punish her.
I had simply stopped offering forgiveness before consequences existed.
Before she left, Rebecca gave me one more thing.
A voice message from Margaret.
It had been sent after the birthday party.
Margaret’s voice was cold and controlled.
Claire is panicking because she knows what happens when a court sees the full picture. Do not let her manipulate you.
I listened twice.
Then a faint voice sounded in the background near the end.
Emma’s.
I looked at Rebecca.
“When was this recorded?”
“Sunday night.”
“That’s impossible.”
Emma had been with me Sunday night.
Rebecca checked the metadata.
Her eyes widened.
The file had been created three weeks earlier.
Margaret had forwarded an old recording and presented it as new.
I played the background again.
Emma said, “Grandma, can I have my backpack?”
That gave us a date range.
Emma had left that backpack at Margaret’s house only once.
The same day she had signed the statement.
The audio was not evidence against me.
It was evidence that Margaret had been recording my daughter during the preparation of her case.
Then Rebecca’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen and went pale.
“Margaret.”
“Answer it.”
Rebecca stared at me.
I shook my head.
“Not on speaker. Just answer normally.”
She did.
Margaret’s first words were loud enough for me to hear anyway.
“Have you deleted the tablet picture yet?”
May you like
Rebecca closed her eyes.
📖 Margaret’s own call revealed she was worried about the photograph linking her to my old iPad, but I still needed proof of what she had done with it. 👇
