Chapter 13 - The Notary

Simon Hall met us in a conference room that smelled like stale printer toner and fear. Mid-fifties. Nervous hands. Cheap tie. The kind of man who built a career on appearing forgettable and suddenly regretted succeeding.

His attorney did most of the talking until Ava laid the side ledger on the table.

The moment Simon saw his initials, something in him loosened.

“I notarized signatures I did not witness,” he said.

No preamble. No moral speech. Just a small man finally admitting the obvious.

“Whose?” Helen asked.

“Daniel Carter’s on the line of credit. Margaret Carter’s on the estate access amendments. Two trust-transfer forms related to Blackstone parcel review authority.” He wiped his forehead. “Nolan told me the family had all agreed. He said the originals were executed off-site and needed formalization for filing.”

“And you believed him?” Ava asked.

Simon gave a short, broken laugh. “No. I believed the checks.”

He received cash through Morrow Field Logistics, then consulting payments through a law clerk service that didn’t really exist. Nolan had designed layers, not because he was brilliant, but because he understood that most people stop digging once paperwork feels boring enough.

Then Simon said the sentence that changed the shape of the room.

“It wasn’t only about the land.”

Ava leaned in. “Go on.”

“There was an insurance-backed development loan. Nolan used Daniel’s identity and family collateral to front liquidity for a side project on the lake. When the project failed, he had to replace the money before annual trust review. If he couldn’t, the fraud chain would expose itself.”

Sarah had been right. The line of credit was cover.

“Nolan planned to move the Blackstone parcel into a release structure he controlled,” Helen said slowly, thinking out loud. “Then liquidate or leverage it to patch the bad development debt.”

Simon nodded miserably. “And if Sarah wouldn’t cooperate, he intended to discredit her and isolate Daniel.”

“All of which led to kidnapping a child?” I asked.

Simon’s eyes shifted. “He didn’t talk like that. He said temporary containment. Said Emily only needed to disappear long enough to make Sarah compliant.”

Temporary containment.

I nearly reached across the table.

Ava kept us moving. “What about Brayside? Dr. Kerr?”

Simon swallowed. “Kerr owed Nolan. Nolan covered an assault complaint from one of Kerr’s private patients last year through a donation arrangement. After that, Kerr signed whatever he was asked to sign.”

A network, then. Not random favors. Mutual blackmail.

We were twenty minutes into recording the statement when Simon’s phone buzzed repeatedly on the table. He glanced at the screen and went pale.

“Who is it?” Ava asked.

He turned the phone over.

Three missed calls. No name. Burner number.

Then a text: Leave now or your daughter gets the same cage.

Simon’s whole body started shaking. “He knows I’m here.”

We moved fast. Officers were sent to Simon’s ex-wife’s home where his college-age daughter was visiting. Patrol got there in time to intercept a suspicious van circling the block, but by then Simon was almost hyperventilating.

It was more than a threat. It was proof Nolan still believed he could reach through walls and touch whoever he wanted.

Simon agreed to sign the statement, but not in that building. Not with his daughter unaccounted for by his own eyes.

Ava arranged secure lodging.

I walked out into the courthouse corridor feeling both triumphant and sick. We had the first full explanation for the financial motive.

Then Helen got a call from the bank’s fraud team.

The forged line of credit had triggered a default cascade.

Unless we secured an emergency injunction by Friday, our house could enter accelerated foreclosure review.

Nolan had not only tried to take my family.

He was still trying to take our home.

📖 Simon Hall finally exposed the debt Nolan had buried under my name, but before we could lock that truth in, the bank moved against my house—and Nolan’s next pressure point hit us where Emily slept. 👇
