Chapter 10 - October Seventeenth
Grant had photographs.
Not of an affair.
Not of a crime.
Of Dad meeting secretly with federal investigators.
Dad had begun discussing accounting irregularities at Sterling Capital before Caleb’s termination.
Grant threatened to portray those meetings as evidence Dad was trying to manipulate regulators against internal rivals.
It might not have destroyed Dad legally.
It could have destroyed a pending merger.
Dad panicked.
He told Marcus to close Caleb’s case.
Caleb became collateral damage.
That was the truth Marcus had carried.
“Why stay silent after the merger?”
“Your father promised he would repair it.”
“Did he?”
“Too late.”
Dad reopened the case years later after learning Grant’s irregularities continued.
Then Dad died.
Marcus believed exposing everything without complete proof would damage Sterling Capital and still fail to clear Caleb.
So he waited.
That choice had consequences.
Caleb spent four years believing the Sterling family deliberately framed him.
He hired Halcyon.
Recruited Diane.
Used Vanessa.
Invaded my home.
None of that became justified because he had once been wronged.
But the motive finally made sense.
We had another major payoff:
Caleb had probably been framed in the original trading scandal.
Grant had manipulated the evidence.
Dad and Marcus suspected it but failed to correct the injustice quickly enough.
The betrayal was older than Vanessa.
Older than Sophie.
Older than my engagement.
Then Grant struck back.
He called an emergency board meeting and presented evidence that Marcus had concealed records for years.
True.
He argued Marcus and Dad had created an unauthorized private investigation that exposed the company to liability.
Also partly true.
He demanded my temporary recusal from the internal review because Marcus reported directly to me.
The board agreed.
I lost access to Sterling Capital’s investigation.
For the first time, Grant controlled the internal process.
Caleb reacted badly.
He sent me a furious message:
YOU’RE LETTING THEM BURY IT AGAIN.
I didn’t answer.
Then another:
I CAN PROVE GRANT USED MY LOGIN.
That changed everything.
Caleb claimed he still possessed the laptop he used while employed at Sterling Capital.
A forensic image could potentially establish whether malware or remote-access software had been installed.
“Where is it?”
His answer:
“Vanessa has it.”
I looked toward the empty space where my fiancée used to sit.
Vanessa had claimed Caleb’s plan never involved physical evidence.
Another lie.
When investigators asked her attorney about the laptop, Vanessa refused to disclose its location.
Her reason was simple.
“If Caleb gets cleared, I lose my leverage over him.”
