Chapter 18 - After the Funeral

Grant accessed three files.

Attachment C.

Dad’s audit summary.

A compensation ledger.

He copied all three.

He deleted none.

That explained why the governance archive remained intact.

Grant wasn’t trying to erase evidence.

He wanted to know what Dad had discovered.

The compensation ledger was the key.

It documented incentive payments tied to several high-value client portfolios.

Grant had received enormous bonuses during the period of the unauthorized trades.

Caleb’s firing prevented those portfolios from being audited deeply enough to question Grant’s compensation.

Money.

Again.

Not some sprawling secret society.

Grant framed Caleb to protect transactions that inflated his performance and compensation.

Dad initially believed him.

Later, Dad realized inconsistencies.

By then, Grant had too much to lose.

That was the fourth major payoff.

Caleb had been framed because Grant needed a scapegoat.

Dad’s mistake enabled it.

Marcus’s silence prolonged it.

Caleb’s revenge operation grew from it.

Vanessa exploited it.

Diane monetized it.

Sophie became the smallest person caught inside years of adult cowardice and greed.

Independent counsel presented preliminary findings to Sterling Capital’s board.

Grant was terminated for cause subject to contractual and legal procedures.

Authorities received relevant evidence.

Caleb’s termination record was formally reopened.

Not erased instantly.

Reviewed.

That distinction mattered to him.

“I lost four years.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

He was right.

I couldn’t give them back.

Sterling Capital eventually offered mediation concerning his wrongful-termination claims without requiring him to abandon accountability for his later conduct.

Caleb laughed when he heard that.

“So they admit I was right.”

“They admit there is enough evidence to negotiate your employment claim.”

He hated the precision.

Reality was precise.

Then Vanessa’s attorney requested a meeting.

She wanted to cooperate fully.

Not because conscience suddenly arrived.

Because Grant’s fall left her exposed.

She offered every message, payment record, and recording she possessed.

In return, she wanted me to publicly state she had never struck Sophie.

I refused.

“I don’t know whether you struck her.”

“The footage doesn’t show it.”

“The footage doesn’t show every day.”

She stared at me.

“What do you want from me?”

“The truth.”

“I’m giving it.”

“No. You’re giving pieces when they become cheaper than keeping them.”

That ended the meeting.

Hours later, Vanessa sent investigators the password to a private cloud account.

Inside were hundreds of videos.

She had recorded Sophie herself.

Not for Caleb.

Not for Grant.

For insurance.

Against everyone.

One video was titled:

RICHARD INSURANCE.

Another:

CALEB INSURANCE.

Another:

GRANT INSURANCE.

And one simply:

May you like

SOPHIE.

📖 Vanessa’s private archive contained the truth she had hidden from every man paying her, including the recording that finally showed what happened when nobody else was watching. 👇
