Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Used Our Name

Aaron identified her from a photograph.
Not Eleanor.
Not anyone in my family.
Her name was Diane Mercer.
I knew her.
Barely.
She had worked as a contract paralegal for Sterling family counsel during my father’s estate restructuring.
Jonathan confirmed she had been dismissed eight months earlier for copying files she wasn’t authorized to retain.
“Why wasn’t I told?”
“Because none of the files involved you directly.”
I stared at him.
“She installed a camera in my house.”
Jonathan had no defense for withholding the earlier breach.
Marcus traced Diane’s recent employment.
Three months after being dismissed, she became a compliance consultant.
Her largest client?
A private investigations firm called Halcyon Strategic.
Vanessa went completely still when she heard the name.
“You know it.”
“No.”
“You reacted.”
She looked at her attorney.
Then back at me.
“My ex-husband used them.”
That was the first time I had heard about an ex-husband.
Vanessa had told me she had never married.
“What’s his name?”
“Caleb Hayes.”
Her surname before our planned marriage was Hayes.
She had described Caleb as a former boyfriend.
Not husband.
“Why lie?”
“Because I wanted that part of my life gone.”
“What does Caleb do?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Her attorney did.
“He works in private wealth management.”
Marcus searched public corporate records.
Caleb Hayes had once worked for Sterling Capital.
My family’s investment subsidiary.
He was terminated four years earlier.
For unauthorized client transactions.
Suddenly the camera had a possible purpose that had nothing to do with Sophie.
Someone connected to a former employee had been watching my house before Vanessa became my fiancée.
Then Eleanor asked the obvious question.
“Did you meet Richard before or after Caleb was fired?”
Vanessa stared at her.
“After.”
“How long after?”
“About a year.”
I remembered our first meeting at a museum benefit.
Accidental.
At least I had believed it was.
My stomach tightened.
“Did Caleb know you were dating me?”
Vanessa’s silence answered.
Her attorney leaned toward her.
Vanessa whispered something.
Then she looked at me.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because he told me to.”
The room became silent.
Vanessa began crying.
Not elegantly.
Not strategically.
Her shoulders shook.
“Caleb wanted me near you.”
There was our first major payoff.
Our relationship had not begun by chance.
But before I could ask why, Sophie waddled into the doorway with Eleanor behind her.
She saw Vanessa.
Her whole body recoiled.
Vanessa’s tears stopped.
Sophie pointed directly at her.
“Mean.”
Whatever Caleb had planned, Vanessa had still terrified my daughter.

And those were two separate truths I refused to confuse.
📖 Vanessa admitted our romance began as part of Caleb’s plan, but what she confessed next proved his scheme never required her to hurt Sophie. 👇
