Chapter 6 - The Payment
The transfer was $75,000.
Not from Caleb directly.
From Halcyon Strategic.
Vanessa had received three earlier payments totaling $125,000.
Two predated our engagement.
The final payment arrived six days ago.
Memo:
BEHAVIORAL DOCUMENTATION.
I felt sick reading it.
Vanessa insisted it referred to me.
“Caleb wanted footage of Richard losing his temper.”
That explanation made sense.
Too much sense.
The hidden camera faced the main living room.
Vanessa’s treatment of Sophie could provoke a confrontation if I discovered it.
“Were you trying to make me angry?”
She looked away.
“Yes.”
Eleanor swore under her breath.
Vanessa rushed on.
“Caleb said you had a violent temper. He wanted proof.”
“I don’t.”
“I know that now.”
“Yet you terrorized Sophie hoping I would react.”
“I never meant—”
“Stop saying what you meant.”
She did.
Intent mattered legally.
Consequences mattered to my daughter.
Marcus recovered messages from Vanessa’s phone with her consent after counsel preserved them.
Caleb’s instructions were careful.
CREATE DOMESTIC INSTABILITY.
CAPTURE REACTION.
DO NOT CREATE INJURY.
Vanessa had responded:
THE CHILD MAKES IT EASY.
My hands shook.
Eleanor reached for them beneath the table.
Caleb had designed psychological manipulation.
Vanessa had chosen Sophie as the pressure point.
But another message complicated everything.
Three days earlier, Caleb wrote:
STOP USING THE CHILD. RICHARD ISN’T REACTING. FIND ANOTHER METHOD.
Vanessa answered:
TOO LATE.
Caleb replied:
WHAT DID YOU DO?
No response.
I read the exchange repeatedly.
Caleb was guilty of infiltrating my home and trying to manufacture damaging footage.
But even he appeared unaware of how far Vanessa had gone.
Again, nobody’s guilt erased anyone else’s.
The next question was why Caleb wanted footage of me behaving violently.
My attorney found the answer in a civil complaint drafted but never filed.
Caleb planned to accuse Sterling Capital of destroying his career through fraud.
If I appeared unstable or abusive, he believed public pressure could force a settlement before discovery exposed weaknesses in his claim.
Then Marcus recovered another hidden-camera fragment.
This one showed Vanessa carrying Sophie upstairs.
Timestamp: yesterday, 1:14 p.m.
Sophie was screaming.
Vanessa said:
“You want to cry? Fine. We’ll go to the quiet room.”
Sophie’s terrified words suddenly made sense.
“No room.”
There really was a room upstairs.
