Chapter 17 - KEEP THE CHILD AWAY
Why was Sophie a threat?
Not because she understood finance.
Because she noticed things.
Grant’s email continued:
She repeats everything to Evelyn.
That sentence made me furious in a different way.
My daughter trusted me.
They had treated that trust like a security vulnerability.
The email chain showed Eleanor had warned everyone Sophie liked wandering backstage during family events.
She suggested assigning a bridesmaid to keep her downstairs.
Preston agreed.
Lauren never saw the message because she had been excluded from the thread.
During the wedding, the assigned bridesmaid became busy with photographs.
Sophie went upstairs for her flower basket.
She saw the blue box exchange.
Then found the empty pouch later near a chair.
The plan did not fail because Sophie stole.
It failed because adults underestimated a child’s memory.
Detective Reyes asked Sophie to participate in one carefully structured forensic interview.
Michael and I agreed.
Neither of us sat inside.
I hated that.
But trained interviewers needed to avoid suggestion.
Sophie described the afternoon in her own words.
She remembered Eleanor’s perfume.
Preston’s black shoes.
The blue box.
The service elevator.
She remembered the empty pouch beneath a chair because it had a gold drawstring.
She picked it up and asked Grandma whether it was important.
Eleanor took it from her.
That surprised me.
“The pouch wasn't with Sophie when Preston found it?”
“No,” the interviewer later explained. “According to Sophie, Eleanor took it.”
Yet Preston later “found” the same pouch beside Sophie’s table.
That meant Eleanor possessed it in between.
Security footage helped.
At 7:52, Sophie approached Eleanor holding a small blue pouch.
Eleanor took it.
At 8:35, Eleanor approached Preston near the ballroom entrance.
Something passed between their hands.
At 8:39, Preston crossed behind Sophie’s table.
At 8:44, the assault happened.
The chain was now visible.
Sophie found pouch.
Gave it to Eleanor.
Eleanor gave it to Preston.
Preston planted it near Sophie.
Then used it as justification.
This was no mistaken assumption.
The theft evidence was staged.
The prosecutor investigating the assault received the new footage.
Preston’s lawyer stopped using the phrase “good-faith belief.”
Then Eleanor’s attorney changed tactics.
They claimed she gave Preston the pouch only because he asked for it and had no idea he would plant it.
Possible.
Until her phone extraction produced another message.
Eleanor to Grant:
Sophie picked up the pouch.
Grant:
Put it back near her and end this tonight.
Eleanor:
Preston can handle it.
I read the exchange in silence.
My mother had helped set up her granddaughter.
Not because Sophie had done anything.
Because blaming a child offered them a story for the missing necklace.
