There was no escaping the initials.

“No.”

Then Melissa Crane solved it.

I was EVW.

Wedding toasts used small lapel microphones.
Preston had been wearing one when photographers prepared him for the grand entrance.
The microphone was muted to the speakers.
But its transmitter remained connected to the event recorder.
Audio existed from the minutes before the attack.
Daniel warned us.
“We don’t know whether it captured anything useful.”
Police obtained it.
I did not listen immediately.
I waited until Rachel and Detective Reyes reviewed it.
Then Rachel called.
“Evelyn, you need to hear this.”
My mother’s voice came first.
“She gave me the pouch.”
Preston:
“Then put it near her.”
Eleanor:
“Grant says Evelyn will demand the books.”
Preston:
“Not if everyone believes the kid took it.”
A pause.
Then Eleanor:
“Don’t hurt Sophie.”
And Preston answered:
“I just need to scare them both.”
