Chapter 12 - Rebecca’s Second Archive

Rebecca’s video had been recorded three months earlier.

She spoke without the theatrical smile she used at the mansion.

“I built a second archive because Richard trusted power, Margaret trusted evidence, and Adrian trusted institutions.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“All three were wrong.”

The server contained proof Adrian authorized unauthorized fertility procedures.

Proof he continued Winter Glass trials after claiming to shut them down.

Proof he ordered Rebecca to locate my mother and recover the vault.

Adrian moved toward the computer.

Federal agents blocked him.

He invoked national-security authority.

The hospital’s independent attorney refused.

The files began downloading into external court custody.

Adrian looked at me.

“You don’t understand what exposure will cause.”

“I understand what secrecy caused.”

“Operations will collapse.”

“Then they should.”

He lowered his voice.

“Emma’s identity will become public.”

That frightened me.

Rebecca had embedded personal genetic data alongside evidence.

If released carelessly, Emma could become a target.

I ordered the download stopped.

My mother looked shocked.

“Claire—”

“I will not protect institutions, but I will protect my daughter.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

He thought fear had brought me back under control.

I continued.

“We separate the criminal files from victim identities through an independent court.”

His smile disappeared.

A federal judge authorized emergency seizure of the server.

Adrian was suspended pending investigation.

Richard’s attorneys immediately argued all archive evidence was illegally obtained.

Rebecca offered to testify in exchange for immunity.

I visited her in detention.

She sat behind thick glass.

“You poisoned Emma,” I said.

“I intended the cream for you.”

“That is not better.”

“No.”

“Why help expose Adrian?”

“Because he planned to eliminate me after the archive recovery.”

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No.”

“Then why talk?”

“Because Richard has one more weapon.”

“What?”

“Daniel.”

I stared at her.

She explained that Daniel had been exposed to Winter Glass as a teenager.

Richard used him in early family trials.

Certain phrases could trigger memory gaps and violent behavior.

Daniel’s protective instincts had been chemically conditioned.

Every time he became aggressive around Richard, it might not be entirely voluntary.

“Why tell me?”

“Because Richard activated him at the mansion.”

I remembered Daniel hitting his father in the medical room.

Tackling him in the vault.

Normal rage, perhaps.

Or something else.

“What is the trigger phrase?”

Rebecca leaned toward the glass.

“Look who finally arrived.”

Richard had said those words before the blackout.

The moment Daniel began acting differently.

I returned to Emma’s room.

Daniel stood beside the window.

He turned when I entered.

“Did Rebecca talk?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

I hesitated.

His face changed.

“Claire, what did she say?”

Behind him, the television reported Richard was being transferred to federal custody.

The reporter spoke the phrase from the recorded Christmas video.

“Look who finally arrived.”

Daniel’s body went rigid.

Then he looked at me with empty eyes.
