Chapter 13 - The Man Behind Daniel’s Eyes

Daniel did not recognize me.

His breathing slowed.

His shoulders lowered.

The protective father disappeared.

In his place stood someone waiting for an order.

“Daniel?”

He turned toward Emma’s hospital bed.

I moved between them.

His eyes tracked my movement without emotion.

“Security,” I called.

He grabbed my wrist.

Not violently at first.

Efficiently.

He twisted until the phone fell from my hand.

Emma woke.

“Daddy?”

The word reached something inside him.

His grip loosened.

Then Richard’s voice came through the television again.

The recorded clip repeated.

“Look who finally arrived to collect your bodies.”

Daniel pushed me aside and reached for Emma’s IV line.

I hit the emergency button.

Two nurses entered.

He shoved one into the wall.

I grabbed his face.

“Daniel, look at me.”

Nothing.

I shouted the only sentence I could think of.

“Real is who stays.”

The words he had said to Emma.

His eyes flickered.

Emma began crying.

“Daddy, stay.”

His hand stopped over the IV tube.

He looked down.

Then collapsed.

Security restrained him gently.

Doctors sedated him.

I stood beside the bed shaking.

Richard had conditioned his own son.

Rebecca gave us the reversal sequence.

Not a phrase.

A process involving sound, scent, and repeated memory anchors.

Daniel would need treatment.

Independent doctors reviewed his brain scans.

Signs of old chemical exposure appeared.

He had not known.

His childhood contained gaps he blamed on trauma after his mother’s death.

Richard had used him for years.

When Daniel woke, he remembered fragments of attacking us.

He could not stop apologizing.

I sat beside him.

“You were conditioned.”

“I still touched you.”

“You stopped.”

“Because Emma spoke.”

“She brought you back.”

He looked toward our daughter’s room.

“Keep me away from her.”

“No.”

“Claire—”

“We will keep her safe. We will keep you safe too.”

“I could hurt you.”

“Then we build safeguards based on truth. Not secrecy.”

He cried for the first time since I had known him.

Not loudly.

The tears simply came.

Richard’s transfer vehicle was attacked that night.

Two guards were injured.

He disappeared.

Rebecca remained in custody.

Adrian was suspended.

Only one person had the network to free Richard.

My mother.

I confronted her.

She denied involvement.

Then hospital security found a message hidden inside Emma’s Christmas-pajama pocket.

A handwritten note.

COME HOME, CLAIRE.
