Chapter 9 - The Mother Beneath the Mansion

My mother rose slowly from the console.
Her name was Margaret Hart.
For twenty-three years, I believed she died in a Christmas Eve car accident.
She crossed the vault and touched my face.
“You look like me.”
I stepped away.
“Why didn’t you come home?”
Pain moved through her eyes.
“I couldn’t.”
“You were ten miles from me.”
“The archive was the only place Richard could not access without the key.”
“You chose a room over your daughter?”
“I chose to keep him from erasing you completely.”
The vault contained every Winter Glass record.
Patient files.
Videos.
Chemical formulas.
Payments.
Deaths.
My mother had spent two decades preserving evidence while using the archive’s isolated systems to monitor Richard.
She claimed she sent warnings through anonymous channels.
Richard intercepted most of them.
Rebecca entered the vault and aimed her gun at Margaret.
“You should have destroyed the data.”
Margaret looked at her.
“You should have destroyed yourself.”
Rebecca smiled.
“You always were dramatic.”
Richard stepped inside.
“Enough.”
Three people who had built, protected, and exploited Winter Glass stood in the same room.
My mother had worked as a clinical researcher.
Richard funded the program.
Rebecca expanded it.
None of them were innocent.
“Did you experiment on me?” I asked my mother.
She looked down.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s hand found mine.
“I believed the early treatment could help trauma,” Margaret said. “When I learned Richard wanted obedience, I tried to stop him.”
“After using me.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
That honesty hurt differently.
Richard moved toward the control panel.
Margaret blocked him.
“The archive is transmitting.”
Rebecca’s expression changed.
“To whom?”
“Federal servers. News organizations. Medical boards.”
Richard lunged for the console.
Daniel stopped him.
Rebecca fired.
The bullet struck the monitor beside my mother.
Alarms activated.
The vault door began closing automatically.
Rebecca ran toward the exit.
I caught her arm.
She hit me across the face.
Daniel tackled Richard.
My mother reached for the emergency release.
Then Emma’s voice came through the intercom.
“Mom?”
She had found the vault communication panel upstairs.
“Emma, where are you?”
“With Detective Cole.”
“Stay there.”
A second voice came through.
A man.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Claire Hart, step away from the console.”
My mother froze.
Richard smiled.
The man continued.
“This is Director Adrian Lane.”
Rebecca’s supposedly dead brother.
Emma’s possible biological father.
May you like
He was alive.
And he commanded the federal team surrounding the mansion.
