Chapter 1 - The Sip I Couldn’t Take Back

I had already swallowed the tea when my seven-year-old daughter came running into the dining room screaming my name.

“Daddy! Don’t drink the tea!”

I turned just in time to see Nora step directly into Lily’s path.

Her hand moved fast.

The slap caught Lily across the face with a sharp crack that echoed through the dining room.

My daughter lost her balance and fell hard onto the polished floor.

I slammed my teacup onto the table.

“Did you just hit her?!”

Nora froze.

I had known that woman for nine years.

She had worked in my villa since before Lily could walk. Lily called her Aunt Nora because Nora had been there for birthdays, fevers, school mornings, scraped knees, and nights when my work kept me away from home longer than I wanted to admit.

But the woman standing between me and my daughter now did not look like the woman I thought I knew.

Lily pushed herself upright.

She crawled toward me before I could reach her and wrapped both arms around my legs.

Her whole body shook.

“I saw Aunt Nora put something into the tea!”

She pointed at the cup.

I looked down.

One small sip.

That was all I had taken.

Nora’s face went pale.

I picked up the same cup and held it toward her.

“Then you drink it.”

She recoiled.

Her hands came up immediately.

“No.”

That single word changed everything.

I lowered the cup slowly.

“What did you put in there?”

“I didn’t put anything in it.”

“You just refused to drink it.”

“Because you’re threatening me.”

“You slapped a seven-year-old because she tried to stop me from drinking.”

Nora turned toward the doorway.

She moved fast.

I grabbed her wrist.

She twisted.

“Let me go.”

“Not until you tell me what—”

My throat tightened.

The sentence died halfway out.

Heat climbed beneath my collar.

Then my heartbeat changed.

Not faster exactly.

Wrong.

A heavy, uneven thudding spread through my chest.

I released Nora and put one hand to my throat.

The room shifted slightly.

Lily grabbed my arm.

“Dad?”

I braced my other hand against the dining table.

The polished wood seemed to tilt beneath my palm.

Nora stared at me.

The panic on her face deepened.

That was the moment I knew Lily had been right.

Whatever Nora had done, she had expected a reaction.

Maybe not this quickly.

Maybe not this visibly.

But she had expected it.

“Dad... Dad, you just drank it!”

“I know.”

My voice came out rough.

I looked at the cup.

Then at Nora.

“Don’t touch that tea.”

Nora took one step backward.

I pointed at her.

“Don’t move.”

My knees weakened.

Lily tightened both hands around my arm.

I forced myself to stay upright because I could see the terror in her eyes.

“I’m okay.”

It was a lie.

I was not okay.

But I was still conscious.

Still thinking.

Still watching Nora.

And Nora had stopped looking at me.

Her eyes were fixed on the silver sideboard against the far wall.

I followed her gaze.

One of the drawers was slightly open.

Something small and amber-colored lay inside.

Nora suddenly pulled free and lunged toward it.

I moved after her despite the weakness spreading through my legs.

She reached the drawer first.

Her fingers closed around a tiny glass bottle.

Lily screamed.

Nora shoved the bottle into the pocket of her dark uniform.

“What is that?” I demanded.

“Nothing.”

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

I caught the edge of the table before my legs folded.

Nora’s panic changed again.

For one second, she looked toward Lily.

Not with anger.

With fear.

Then she whispered something so quietly I almost missed it.

“You weren’t supposed to see me.”

Lily heard her too.

My daughter pressed against me.

I stared at the woman I had trusted inside my home for almost a decade.

“Nora... who told you to do this?”

Her lips parted.

Before she could answer, my phone vibrated on the dining table.

The screen lit up.

An email notification appeared from my family attorney, Daniel Price.

The subject line contained only four words.
