Chapter 2 - The Documents Activated Before I Fell

I read the notification twice because the first time my mind refused to understand it.
INCAPACITY DOCUMENTS NOW ACTIVE.
I had not lost consciousness.
No doctor had examined me.
Nobody outside that dining room should even have known something was wrong.
Yet paperwork concerning my incapacity had already been triggered.
“Nora.”
She moved toward the door again.
“Stay where you are.”
My voice was weaker now.
She heard it.
So did Lily.
Lily slipped beneath my arm and helped me toward the chair.
My daughter was seven years old and barely reached my chest, but she planted both feet and tried to hold me upright with everything she had.
“I’ve got you, Daddy.”
Those words nearly broke me.
I lowered myself into the chair.
I kept my eyes on Nora.
“Put the bottle on the table.”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“I watched you take it.”
“It’s medicine.”
“For who?”
“Myself.”
“Then why hide it?”
Nora said nothing.
I opened the emergency function on my phone and called for medical help.
Then I called the villa’s night security desk.
“Lock the exterior gates.”
Nora stared at me.
I continued.
“No one leaves until I say otherwise.”
“You can’t imprison me.”
“I’m preserving a scene where my daughter says she witnessed you contaminate my drink.”
“You’re not thinking clearly.”
There it was.
Not denial.
A new strategy.
I looked at her.
“You want me not thinking clearly.”
Her face tightened.
Lily pointed at Nora’s pocket.
“She poured it from that bottle.”
Nora snapped, “Stop lying!”
Lily flinched.
I stood halfway before the room moved again.
“Don’t speak to her.”
Nora looked at me with cold calculation.
“She is confused.”
“She watched you.”
“She sees things.”
“What does that mean?”
“She makes stories when she wants attention.”
Lily’s fingers tightened around my sleeve.
I saw tears gathering again.
I kept my voice controlled.
“You are trying to discredit a seven-year-old because she caught you.”
Nora’s breathing quickened.
Then she reached into her pocket.
For one hopeful second, I thought she was giving me the bottle.
Instead she pulled out a black plastic card.
A security access card.
Mine had a silver stripe.
Household staff had green stripes.
The card in Nora’s hand had no stripe at all.
I recognized that kind immediately.
Executive override.
Only four people possessed one.
Me.
My chief of staff, Claire Reeves.
My uncle Grant Blackwood.
And Daniel Price, the attorney who administered my family trust.
Nora looked down as though she had forgotten she was holding it.
I held out my hand.
“Where did you get that?”
She shoved it back into her pocket.
“It was in the kitchen.”
“That card can open my study.”
No answer.
“My private office.”
Still nothing.
“And the document vault.”
Lily looked at me.
“Daddy?”
I forced my attention back to her.
“Did Nora go into my study?”
Lily nodded.
“Before dinner.”
Nora closed her eyes.
Lily continued.
“She told me I wasn’t allowed upstairs.”
“What did you see?”
“She had a blue folder.”
My chest tightened for a completely different reason.
There was only one blue folder in my private document vault.
The original Blackwood Voting Trust.
I kept no working copies in blue.
Only the signed original.
I reached for my phone.
The notification from Daniel Price was still there.
I opened the email.
The message contained no greeting.
No explanation.
Only a PDF titled:
NOTICE OF TEMPORARY EXECUTIVE INCAPACITY.
Effective time:
8:17 p.m.
I looked at the clock mounted near the dining-room doors.
8:18.
The document had become effective one minute earlier.
Before any physician had declared me incapacitated.
Before the medical team had even arrived.
At the bottom was Daniel Price’s electronic signature.
Beneath it was another name.
Grant Blackwood.
Interim voting proxy.
Nora watched me read.
Something in my face must have told her what I had found.
She whispered, “I didn’t know they were doing it tonight.”
I looked up.
“They?”
She realized her mistake.
The distant sound of the villa gates closing carried through the quiet house.
Nora backed toward the doorway.
I stood again.
This time I stayed upright.
“Who is ‘they’?”
She shook her head.
“Nora.”
“I can’t.”
“Someone tried to poison me in front of my daughter.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
I had never seen Nora cry.
Not once.
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
And whispered, “If I tell you, they’ll take her too.”
I went cold.
“Take who?”
Nora’s gaze dropped toward Lily.
Before she could answer, the security panel beside the dining-room entrance beeped.
A red notice flashed.
PRIVATE STUDY ACCESS DETECTED.
Someone was upstairs.
Inside my locked study.
