Chapter 1 - THE PAPER BETWEEN US
Daniel’s hand struck my daughter before I could reach them.
The sound cracked through the wedding hallway.
Lily staggered sideways, one white shoe sliding across the polished floor. Her hand flew to her cheek.
“Give it back to me!”
She was crying.
Daniel stood over her in his black tuxedo, gripping a folded document.
I froze.
Ten minutes earlier, I had been in my dressing room waiting for someone to tell me it was time to walk toward the ceremony.
Now my eight-year-old daughter had a red mark spreading across her face.
Daniel saw me.
His expression changed instantly.
The anger vanished.
“She’s trying to ruin the wedding again.”
He pushed the paper behind his back.
Lily ran toward me.
I dropped to my knees and caught her.
“Mommy…”
Her arms locked around my neck.
I touched her cheek.
“Did he hit you?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Claire, don’t encourage this.”
I looked up.
“Encourage what?”
“She went through my briefcase and stole confidential paperwork.”
Lily tightened her grip.
“He said you’d choose him.”
My stomach turned.
“What?”
Daniel reached toward my arm.
“Come with me. We’re already late.”
I jerked his hand away.
He grabbed again.
That was when I slapped him.
Fast.
Hard.
Daniel lost his balance and dropped to one knee.
The folded document slipped from his hand.
It landed directly between us.
For half a second, I saw the top page.

Daniel saw me reading.
His face changed.
I bent down.
He lunged.
His fingers reached it first.
He yanked the document away.
“Daniel.”
He backed toward the wall.
Lily pointed.
“Mom! That’s the thing he didn’t want you to see!”
Daniel’s skin had gone pale.
Guests began appearing at the far end of the hallway.
My maid of honor, Ava Morgan, stopped when she saw Lily crying.
The venue coordinator rushed forward.
“What happened?”
Daniel answered before I could.
“Family misunderstanding.”
“No.”
My voice sounded strangely calm.
I stood and put Lily behind me.
“The wedding is stopped.”
Daniel stared at me.
“Claire.”
I removed my engagement ring.
“Give me the document.”
“You don’t understand what it is.”
“Then explain it.”
“It’s business paperwork.”
“Why did you hit Lily over business paperwork?”
He looked at the gathering guests.
“You’re doing this here?”
“You chose here.”
His jaw tightened.
Then he lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what you’re risking.”
Lily flinched.
I heard what Daniel had told her before I arrived.
One word, and you lose everything.
I stepped closer.
“What exactly am I going to lose?”
Daniel said nothing.
That frightened me more than another threat would have.
The venue’s security director appeared beside us.
“Ma’am, do you want him separated from you?”
I looked at the man I had almost married.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“Claire, if you stop this ceremony, there’s no taking it back.”
I pulled Lily against my side.
“There shouldn’t be.”
Security moved between us.
Daniel finally unfolded the document slightly while trying to push it into his jacket.
I saw one more line.
Closing condition: certified marriage record.
My heart stopped.
He didn’t merely have paperwork involving my company.
