Chapter 9 - DANIEL’S COUNTERATTACK

Daniel went public before I did.

A gossip site posted security footage from the wedding hallway.

Not the entire clip.

Only seven seconds.

Me slapping Daniel.

Him dropping to one knee.

Headline:

HOTEL HEIRESS ATTACKS FIANCÉ MOMENTS BEFORE WEDDING.

Lily was cropped out.

So was Daniel striking her.

I felt sick.

Maya warned me not to respond emotionally.

Then Daniel’s attorney released a statement.

Mr. Carter deeply regrets a private family disagreement was escalated into false accusations after Ms. Bennett abruptly withdrew from mutually planned financial arrangements.

Mutually planned.

Two words designed to poison everything.

By noon, business reporters were asking whether Bennett Hospitality had failed to disclose a significant pending ownership transfer.

The board called an emergency meeting.

I entered with Samuel and Maya.

Peter Collins sat near the far end.

I looked at him differently now.

That hurt.

The chairman, Richard Evans, placed Daniel’s forged contribution agreement on the table.

“Claire, did you authorize this?”

“No.”

“Your certificate is attached.”

“It was stolen.”

“Did you discuss transferring shares after marriage?”

“I discussed estate planning. Not this.”

Richard turned toward Peter.

“Did your office create a data room for Carter-Bennett Holdings?”

Peter nodded.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

Peter looked genuinely confused.

“Because the request came from you.”

“No, it didn’t.”

He opened an email.

My name.

My corporate address.

Claire Bennett:

Peter, Daniel is helping coordinate the family transfer. Give him read access. Please don’t loop in the full board until after the wedding; I don’t want unnecessary noise.

I stared.

I had never written it.

Peter continued.

“I verified through your assistant.”

I looked at Ava.

She shook her head immediately.

“What did you ask her?”

Peter searched his messages.

Peter:

Claire wants Daniel added to the transfer data room. Confirm?

Ava:

Yes, she asked me this morning.

Ava covered her mouth.

“That isn’t from my phone.”

The boardroom changed temperature.

Either both Peter and Ava were lying.

Or someone controlled enough of our communication systems to imitate us.

Daniel’s strategy suddenly looked stronger.

He did not need a jury to believe every forged message.

He needed uncertainty.

If executives could not distinguish real instructions from false ones, Bennett Hospitality had a governance crisis.

Richard leaned back.

“Until we complete an independent review, I recommend Claire temporarily step away from transaction approvals.”

I felt slapped again.

“This company is mine.”

Samuel corrected gently.

“You own a large part of it. The company belongs to all shareholders.”

I hated that he was right.

Then Richard asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Can we protect Bennett Hospitality while Claire’s personal accounts are compromised?”

Silence.

I looked around at people who had trusted me for years.

Daniel had turned my marriage into corporate risk.

If I fought to keep every authority, I would prove his favorite accusation:

that control mattered more to me than judgment.

“I’ll step away from transaction approvals.”

Peter looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I wasn’t ready to forgive him.

But I also did not yet know what he had done.

Then Maya’s phone buzzed.

The protective-order hearing had been moved up.

Daniel’s lawyer intended to use the edited security clip to argue that I, not Daniel, was the physically aggressive adult.

Daniel was attacking on every front at once.

Family.

Reputation.

Business.

And he was counting on me to react badly.

📖 Daniel turned my slap into a public weapon and forced me to surrender company authority, but the full hallway footage was about to challenge the story he sold outside the courtroom. 👇
