Chapter 2 - THE LAWYER IN THE HOSPITAL

Evelyn Shaw was a retired Navy intelligence commander.

Her law practice had been a cover for monitoring the Hart family trust.

Grandma—Admiral Eleanor Hart, though none of us had known her rank—created the trust after returning from Vietnam and building a classified maritime logistics network.

The house was not merely property.

It concealed the original access point to a Navy contingency archive.

Harold had been assigned as a civilian caretaker when he married Margaret.

He was paid to protect the location.

Instead, he tried to sell it.

Claire discovered the archive years earlier.

She impersonated me because the biometric system recognized daughters from the Hart line.

My face, voice, and service record gave her temporary access.

The false death document was supposed to clear my command credentials and transfer authority to her.

Evelyn claimed she intended to stop them.

Grandma’s warning said not to trust her.

Both could be true.

Then the hospital television resumed.

The vault camera showed Harold removing the second flash drive that morning.

The safe-deposit alert had been real.

He was in custody, but someone used his key.

Deputy Collins checked the evidence log.

The brass key taken from Harold after arrest was a duplicate.

The original remained missing.

Then Claire screamed in the hallway.

A man wearing my Navy dress uniform walked toward the room.

Same face as me.

Same height.

Captain’s rank.

He held the original key.

Security raised their weapons.

The woman stopped.

“I’m not Olivia.”

She removed a prosthetic cheek layer.

Her face remained almost identical.

“My name is Anna Hart.”

I had never heard the name.

She looked at Evelyn.

“And Grandma told me you’d try to open the wrong drive.”
