Chapter 5 - THE ROOM BELOW THE RUG

The braided rug concealed a circular steel hatch.

Below it sat a Navy communications chamber built during the Cold War.

Walls of analog maps.

Encrypted radios.

Film reels.

A central safe.

Harold, Claire, and Daniel entered together.

Not enemies.

Partners.

Their public conflict had been staged to keep everyone else away.

Claire’s threat in the hospital was designed to make me press the call button, ensuring security removed her before Evelyn arrived.

She wanted the attorney alone with me.

Why?

Because Evelyn’s folder contained the decoy flash drive.

Opening it would activate a tracking signal revealing the location of Grandma’s mobile command unit.

Claire had manipulated us into doing exactly that.

Anna stopped the drive before insertion.

The trap failed.

Then Daniel opened the underground safe with Harold’s original key.

Inside was no money.

Only Navy casualty records and a red folder labeled HART SUCCESSION.

The first page listed Olivia Hart as primary commander.

Anna as alternate.

Claire as civilian proxy.

Harold as caretaker.

Margaret as unaware spouse.

Everyone’s role had been written years earlier.

Grandma had assigned us positions before we made choices.

Then the underground monitor turned on.

Grandma appeared live.

Older.

Alive.

She said:

“Olivia, if Harold struck you, the family has reached final activation.”

My father looked into the camera.

“You told me she had to bleed on the rug.”

The braided rug was not sentimental.

It was a biometric trigger.

My blood from the assault had activated the archive.

Grandma had predicted—or engineered—the violence.
