Chapter 6 - THE FATHER FILES

Sophie's records listed three possible fathers.
Jason Walker.
Nathan Hale.
Marcus Hale.
Genetic testing confirmed Jason was the biological source.
But Nathan had raised her during early years.
Marcus appeared in training videos under his own face without knowing they were used.
The child had been taught to call authority “Dad.”
HONOR LINE wanted obedience attached to rank.
General Hale removed his stars before speaking to her.
“My name is Marcus.”
She stared at the plain shoulders.
“Are you still important?”
“No more than you.”
The answer confused her.
That confusion was the beginning of freedom.
Then Jason admitted visiting the ridge because Nathan promised to remove him from the heir program if he cooperated.
He knew HONOR LINE planned to use family genetics.
He did not know Sophie had already been created.
He chose his own safety over mine.
Richard chose the company.
Jason chose survival.
General Hale chose secrecy.
Every man had a reason.
I had been the one in the valley.
Then forensic teams recovered another file from the black vehicle.
A live casualty list.
The three soldiers who died in Ghazni had been marked ACCEPTABLE LOSS before departure.
Their deaths were planned.
The program used combat outcomes to test whether I would obey, collapse, or take command.
My Medal of Honor had grown from a laboratory built with bodies.
I removed my cap.
Not in shame.
In mourning.
Then Sergeant Ruiz, one of the survivors, stood in the audience.
He had been invited quietly.
He said, “Captain, we knew the route felt wrong.”
“Why didn't anyone say it?”
May you like
“We trusted the order.”
That was the wound beneath everything.
