Chapter 9 - THE AUDIENCE

Reporters' devices had unknowingly uploaded facial responses through the ceremony Wi-Fi.

Military officers.

Family members.

Politicians.

The system mapped who defended me, who doubted, who remained silent, and who followed authority.

HONOR LINE was selecting future collaborators.

The real target was not my medal.

It was everyone watching.

The data transfer was interrupted before completion, but partial profiles escaped.

Defense companies began receiving anonymous reports rating officials for compliance.

Public careers were threatened.

The Army disclosed the breach.

Transparency cost reputations.

Secrecy would have cost institutions.

Then my mother, Eleanor Walker, arrived at Fort Liberty.

She had not attended the ceremony because Richard told her I requested no contact.

A lie.

She watched the footage and slapped him.

The irony did not comfort me.

She had spent years allowing his favoritism toward Jason.

She claimed she never knew about HONOR LINE.

Her bank account received payments labeled family consulting.

She said Richard controlled the finances.

Documents showed she signed renewals.

Another adult who knew enough to ask questions and chose comfort.

Then Eleanor revealed Richard once brought home a second Emma.

A girl my age.

Same hair.

Same eyes.

She lived with them for one week while I was at military camp.
