Chapter 11 - The Attorney’s Printer
Samantha went pale when forensic analysis traced the document.
My objective was to determine whether she had betrayed us.
Every office printer leaves microscopic tracking marks.
The birth certificate had been printed on Samantha’s private machine three days earlier.
She denied creating it.
Her office access log showed entry at 2:11 a.m.
Badge used: Samantha Reed.
Security footage had been deleted.
David no longer trusted anyone.
Samantha voluntarily surrendered her laptop and phone.
Dana found remote-access software installed through a legal filing attachment.
The program had copied her client files, signatures, and printer credentials.
The infection came from the emergency guardianship order.
Judge Voss’s clerk had sent it.
Eleanor’s network had penetrated Samantha’s office the moment she opened the case.
That cleared Samantha partially.
But the printer required physical paper loading.
Someone had entered.
The building lobby camera showed Rachel.
She admitted Eleanor ordered her to deliver a sealed envelope to Samantha’s reception desk two nights earlier.
“I didn’t know what was inside.”
The envelope contained specialty certificate paper.
Rachel had unknowingly supplied the material for the forged birth record.
Again, Eleanor used people without revealing the full act.
Then Samantha found a hidden clause in her own engagement agreement with us.
A paragraph had been inserted after David signed electronically.
It authorized Samantha’s firm to accept service on my behalf.
That meant every custody notice Eleanor sent to the firm could be legally considered delivered, even if I never saw it.
Someone had manipulated our attorney-client relationship before the case began.
The insertion came from Samantha’s senior partner, Gregory Shaw.
He represented Carter Family Recovery Services in another matter.
Samantha confronted him on speaker.
Shaw remained calm.
“You are emotionally compromised.”
“You altered my client’s contract.”
“I corrected an omission.”
“Who paid you?”
He ended the call.
Dana obtained his billing records.
Shaw had received $300,000 from Eleanor’s trust.
He also handled Claire Morgan’s guardianship.
Samantha’s own mentor was part of the network.
Police searched his office.
They found original custody orders, sealed adoption records, and a backup server.
One folder was titled CARTER INFANTS.
Inside were files for Daniel, David, Noah, Liam, and another child.
A girl born thirty-one years earlier.
Maya Lane.
Me.
My own birth record had been altered too.
The listed father was not the man who raised me.
It was Gregory Shaw.
