Chapter 8 - The Brother Who Was Buried Empty

Daniel Carter’s death certificate listed drowning.
No body had ever been recovered.
My goal was to understand why Eleanor declared him dead before Noah’s birth.
David remembered the accident clearly.
Daniel’s boat was found drifting.
His jacket was wet.
His phone was gone.
Eleanor organized a memorial within forty-eight hours.
She refused to continue the search.
At the time, David thought grief had broken her.
Now he saw planning.
Samantha obtained the maritime investigation.
A bloodstain had been found on the boat rail.
DNA testing was never completed.
The sample still existed in evidence storage.
Dana requested an emergency comparison against Noah.
The result returned that evening.
The blood belonged to Noah’s biological father.
Daniel.
But the amount was too small to prove death.
Then Rachel confessed what she had hidden for thirteen years.
Daniel had planned to run away with her.
He knew Eleanor would never accept a poor teenage girl as the mother of a Carter child.
He told Rachel to meet him after the birth.
He never arrived.
Dr. Crane told Rachel the baby died.
Eleanor told David that Daniel drowned.
Both stories removed him and the child at the same time.
David searched old emails saved on a family server.
One draft from Daniel had never been sent.
Mom knows about the baby. If anything happens to me, check the clinic basement.
Halston Avenue had a basement.
Police returned with a search warrant.
Behind a false wall, they found a long-term patient room.
The bed had been recently used.
A man’s clothes hung in the closet.
A photograph of Noah sat beside the lamp.
The patient file identified him as Subject D.
Medical notes covered thirteen years.
Sedation.
Memory impairment.
Restricted mobility.
The latest entry read:
Transfer authorized by Eleanor Carter.
Daniel might still be alive.
Then officers found a fingerprint on the room’s mirror.
It matched Daniel’s childhood passport file.
David sat down on the floor.
His brother had not abandoned them.
He had been imprisoned.
A hidden audio recorder inside the room contained one recent message.
Daniel’s voice was weak.
“If David finds this, tell him Mom moved me whenever he got close.”
Then he gave a location.
Carter Lake House.
The family property Eleanor claimed had been sold ten years earlier.
Property records showed it was still owned through a trust.
David prepared to go with police.
Before leaving, he received a secure email.
It contained one photograph.
Daniel stood alive beside Eleanor.
Noah stood between them.
Underneath was a sentence:
Bring Maya’s signed guardianship consent, or your brother disappears for real.

I thought Eleanor’s goal was to take Liam—but she was willing to trade two generations of stolen sons for legal control of me.
The guardianship document she demanded contained a hidden clause transferring ownership of David’s entire company.
