Chapter 13 - The Man With the Syringe

The false security officer was identified as Aaron Morgan.

My goal was to learn whether he was Claire’s stolen son or her captor.

He was twenty-eight.

Claire Morgan was forty-five.

She gave birth to her first child at seventeen.

That child had been taken.

Years later, she gave birth again to baby boy Morgan—the infant bracelet found in Eleanor’s suitcase.

The ages did not match.

Aaron was Claire’s first stolen son.

The bracelet belonged to her second.

Eleanor had used one stolen child to help take another.

Dana interrogated Aaron.

He claimed Eleanor raised him in private schools and told him Claire was a drug addict who abandoned him.

He believed the network rescued children.

He became an enforcement officer for emergency removals.

Only recently had he learned Claire was his mother.

Eleanor promised to reunite them if he helped complete my case.

The photograph of Claire alive had been staged to control him.

Aaron gave Dana the location where Claire and her newborn were held.

An abandoned maternity clinic outside the city.

Police found Claire in a locked recovery room.

Alive.

Weak.

Her baby was in a separate nursery.

Both survived.

Claire identified Dr. Crane and Eleanor.

She also recognized Rachel.

Rachel had delivered supplies once while wearing Eleanor’s coat.

That explained why she had access and why Eleanor trusted her with cleanup.

Rachel broke down.

“I thought they were patients.”

Claire looked at her.

“They were prisoners.”

That confrontation forced Rachel to stop presenting herself as merely manipulated.

She had ignored what she saw.

Like Patricia.

Like David before he questioned the company.

Like me when Eleanor’s insults seemed merely cruel instead of organized.

We had all missed pieces because the full truth was too large to imagine.

Aaron surrendered the syringe he carried into our apartment.

It contained a drug that could suppress breathing and appear as postpartum cardiac failure.

The dosage matched an unsigned death certificate template created for me.

My cause of death had already been selected.

Then he gave us Eleanor’s private phone.

It held videos, payments, and voice commands.

The strongest recording showed Eleanor speaking to Dr. Crane after Liam’s birth.

“Keep Maya alive until the trust confirms.”

Crane asked, “And if the child isn’t eligible?”

“Then neither of them matters.”

The inheritance test had determined whether we lived.

Dana found the genetic confirmation.

Liam qualified.

That was why the plan shifted from killing us to declaring me incompetent and taking him.

The reward was finally clear: Eleanor’s motive connected every act.

But the phone contained a scheduled message sent after Eleanor escaped the lake house.

It was addressed to David.

You rescued Daniel. You rescued Noah. You rescued Maya.

Now decide which one goes to prison for the death of your father.

David’s father, Thomas Carter, had died twelve years earlier of a heart attack.

Eleanor’s attached video showed David standing over his body.

I thought Eleanor had run out of leverage—but she had preserved footage that could turn David from rescuer into murderer.

The unedited version revealed who was holding the camera.
