Chapter 1 - NOBODY LET ME FINISH

Ryan stepped in front of me before I could answer the doctor.
“She’s lying. She does this for attention.”
His voice filled the hospital examination room with the same confidence he used at family dinners, church fundraisers, and police stations.
The charming husband.
The worried father.
The patient man married to an unstable woman.
I recoiled against the examination bed and wrapped one arm around my thirty-two-week belly.
My swollen left eye throbbed beneath the fluorescent lights.
Dr. Rebecca Collins moved faster than Ryan expected.
She planted herself directly between us and thrust one hand toward his chest.
“Stop.”
Ryan blinked.
People did not stop him.
They apologized.
They laughed nervously.
They let him explain me.
He tried stepping around her.
Dr. Collins shifted with him and pointed toward the open doorway.
“You will remain over there.”
Ryan smiled as though she had misunderstood a joke.
“Doctor, Emily gets overwhelmed. I’m only helping.”
“You are interrupting.”
“She forgets details.”
“I asked her.”
His smile tightened.
I gripped the edge of the examination table.
My fingers shook so badly that the paper beneath me crackled.
Dr. Collins picked up my chart and flipped through the pages.
Prenatal appointment one.
Patient anxious. Husband provides history.
Appointment two.
Patient confused. Husband clarifies.
Appointment three.
Patient reports dizziness. Husband says she exaggerates.
Appointment four.
Unexplained bruising. Patient declined private examination.
I had never declined.
Ryan had answered before I could speak.
Dr. Collins stopped turning pages.
Her expression hardened.
“You answer one more question for her, and you’re leaving.”
Ryan’s eyes flashed.
The anger appeared for less than a second before the public smile covered it again.
“Of course.”
Dr. Collins turned to me.
“Emily, are you safe at home?”
My throat closed.
Ryan shifted behind her.
I felt his stare.
The warning.
The promise of what would happen later.
I looked at the doctor instead.
For the first time, I did not look toward my husband for permission.
“Nobody ever let me finish talking.”
Ryan slammed his palm onto the counter.
“We’re leaving. Right now.”
The nurse moved into the doorway.
She did not touch him.
She did not need to.
Dr. Collins lifted the fresh laboratory results beside my older records.
Her eyes moved between two numbers.
Then a third.
Her jaw tightened.
Ryan noticed.
“What did you find?”
Dr. Collins closed the chart.
She looked directly into my eyes.
Not at my bruises.
Not at my husband.
At me.
“Emily, when was the last time you took medication that Ryan did not hand to you?”
My heart stopped.
May you like
Ryan stepped backward.
The nurse quietly closed the hallway door.
