Chapter 14 - THE DOCTOR’S SECRET
Dr. Collins did not deny knowing Judge Vale.
She requested to speak with investigators immediately.
Years earlier, Vale funded a scholarship program for medical students.
Dr. Collins received one.
She later learned the money came from the Hart family trust.
Vale expected favors.
She refused.
That was why she transferred hospitals and specialized in high-risk pregnancy care.
But there was more.
During residency, Dr. Collins treated Daniel after the crash.
She noticed injuries inconsistent with the police report.
She reported them.
The report disappeared.
Vale threatened to end her career.
She kept a private copy.
For ten years, it remained hidden inside a safe-deposit box.
The report proved Daniel’s vehicle had been struck intentionally from the driver’s side.
Paint fragments matched a truck registered to Ryan’s father.
Dr. Collins had suspected a cover-up but never knew I was connected.
“I should have fought harder,” she told me.
“You were a resident.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
She looked at me.
“That does not erase what fear allowed.”
Her honesty saved her.
The report reopened the original crash investigation.
Ryan’s father, Frank Cole, had died five years earlier.
But financial records showed Judge Vale paid him two hundred thousand dollars after the accident.
Diane transferred the money.
Ryan drove the truck.
His father destroyed it afterward.
Prosecutors added attempted murder and conspiracy charges.
Then they found the final piece.
A recording stored inside Daniel’s old hospital room.
He had secretly activated a voice assistant during one of Ryan’s visits.
Ryan said,
“When Grace inherits, I control the voting shares. Emily won’t survive the delivery, and you won’t survive the month.”
Daniel asked,
“What if the baby dies?”
Ryan answered,
“Rebecca Collins won’t let that happen.”
Ryan believed Dr. Collins was part of the plan.
He assumed Vale still controlled her.
That was why he allowed me to attend the high-risk clinic.
He thought she would falsify the results like Mercer.
Instead, she read the chart.
She listened.
She stopped him.
The case went to trial six months later.
Ryan was convicted of attempted murder, poisoning, domestic violence, reproductive assault, fraud, kidnapping conspiracy, arson, and the attempted murder of Daniel Hart.
Judge Vale received life without parole.
Mercer accepted a forty-year sentence in exchange for testimony.
Diane was convicted of attempted murder and conspiracy.
Charles Hart withdrew his guardianship claim after investigators discovered he had secretly negotiated with Ryan for company shares.
Grace came home from the hospital at four months old.
She weighed seven pounds.
The first night, I sat beside her crib and watched her breathe.
Hannah slept on the couch.
