Chapter 13 - THE HEARING

Judge Vale was removed from the bench and arrested.

Ryan, Diane, Mercer, and the private transport contractors were indicted.

The hospital placed my daughter under permanent security.

Daniel began rehabilitation.

The Hart family trust filed an emergency guardianship case.

Not against Ryan.

Against me.

Daniel’s uncle, Charles Hart, claimed I had exploited Daniel’s condition and used stolen genetic material to create an heir.

He wanted Grace placed under corporate guardianship until adulthood.

I stood in court four weeks after giving birth.

My body still hurt.

My daughter remained in the neonatal unit.

Ryan sat at the defense table in shackles, smiling as though he still owned the story.

Charles Hart’s attorney presented the kitchen video.

It showed me holding the knife.

Crying.

Appearing unstable.

He did not show Ryan drugging me first.

The attorney asked,

“Mrs. Cole, did you threaten your unborn child?”

“No.”

“Is that you in the video?”

“Yes.”

“Are you holding a knife?”

“Yes.”

Ryan’s smile widened.

Then Dr. Collins testified.

She explained the sedative levels, the forged records, the misoprostol, the placental abruption, and the attempted potassium injection.

The full baby-monitor recording from our kitchen played next.

Ryan’s voice appeared before the edited clip.

“Take the pill.”

My voice answered,

“It makes me forget.”

Ryan said,

“That’s the point.”

The courtroom went silent.

The video continued.

He placed the knife in my hand.

He positioned the camera.

He whispered instructions while I struggled to remain conscious.

Ryan stopped smiling.

Hannah’s recording played after that.

“If the pressure doesn’t finish her, the delivery will.”

Mercer identified both voices.

Then Daniel entered the courtroom using a walker.

Every person stood.

Ryan stared at him as if seeing a ghost.

Daniel testified about the crash, Mercy Pines, the stolen sample, and the false death.

Charles Hart’s attorney asked,

“Mr. Hart, do you believe Emily should raise the child?”

Daniel looked at me.

Then toward the photograph of Grace displayed beside the judge.

“She protected our daughter before she knew the truth.”

He faced the court.

“She is Grace’s mother. No trust document changes that.”

The judge denied corporate guardianship.

Temporary sole custody remained with me.

Daniel received supervised parental access while recovering.

Ryan stood suddenly.

“She belongs to me!”

Deputies restrained him.

He pointed at me.

“I made this family!”

I looked directly at him.

“No.”

My voice did not shake.

“You only tried to own it.”

As deputies removed him, he shouted one final threat.

“You think Vale was in charge?”

Agent Bennett turned.

Ryan laughed.

“Ask Rebecca Collins who paid for her medical school.”

Every eye moved toward Dr. Collins.

Her face went pale.
