Chapter 11 - THE PATERNITY FILE

Police dragged Diane into custody.

Her final words remained inside my head.

Ryan is not the father.

Dr. Collins requested genetic testing.

I told myself Diane was lying.

She wanted to hurt me.

She had failed to kill my daughter, so she attacked the only certainty I had left.

But Ryan had controlled every fertility appointment.

Every laboratory result.

Every medication.

We had struggled to conceive for two years.

Then Dr. Mercer recommended intrauterine insemination.

Ryan claimed his sperm count was low.

The procedure worked on the first attempt.

I had never seen the original laboratory report.

Dr. Mercer confessed after prosecutors confronted him.

Ryan was sterile.

He had known for years.

The donor sample had not come from an anonymous bank.

Ryan selected it personally.

“Whose?” I asked.

Mercer stared at the table between us.

“I never knew his full name.”

“You performed the procedure.”

“Ryan brought a sealed specimen.”

“Was it legal?”

“No.”

“Was the donor aware?”

Mercer looked away.

“No.”

My stomach turned.

The police searched Ryan’s home office.

Behind a false wall, they found medical records belonging to six men.

All had dated women Ryan later pursued.

One name was circled.

Daniel Hart.

My college boyfriend.

The man I almost married.

Daniel disappeared from my life after a car accident left him in a coma.

His family moved him to a long-term care facility.

I had not seen him in ten years.

Ryan told me Daniel died.

That was another lie.

Police located him at Mercy Pines Behavioral Hospital.

The same facility Ryan tried to transfer me to.

Daniel was alive.

Awake.

Legally declared incompetent.

His medical guardian was Judge Marcus Vale.

The conspiracy was older than my marriage.

Dr. Collins arranged for a court-appointed advocate to review Daniel’s records.

He had suffered severe brain trauma but regained speech four years earlier.

Every petition for independent evaluation had been denied.

Signed by Judge Vale.

Ryan visited him six times.

The final visit happened two days before my fertility procedure.

DNA results arrived the next morning.

Ryan was excluded as the biological father.

Daniel Hart matched with a probability greater than 99.9 percent.

My daughter was his.

Hannah sat beside me while I cried.

Not because Daniel was the father.

Because Ryan had stolen a part of both of us.

Dr. Collins entered holding another report.

“Emily, there is more.”

The sedative in my blood matched medication regularly administered to Daniel at Mercy Pines.

Ryan had access through Mercer.

He did not choose Daniel only because of our history.

Daniel’s family owned a medical technology company worth hundreds of millions.

His daughter would be a legal heir.

If Daniel died without recognized children, Judge Vale controlled the trust.

If my baby’s paternity became known, Vale would lose everything.

That was why the transfer order sent me to Mercy Pines.

Not only to silence me.

To place me beside the man they had already imprisoned.

Then the hospital attorney received an emergency notice.

Daniel Hart had died ten minutes earlier.

Cause listed as cardiac arrest.
