Chapter 10 - THE GUESTHOUSE

Grace would not let us storm into the guesthouse.

“It’s part of the estate,” Dad argued.

“It was assigned to Lacey as a guest space,” Grace said. “We preserve evidence. We don’t create an argument about unlawful entry.”

So Owen accessed the exterior security camera instead.

At 12:07 p.m., Lacey appeared carrying my silver laptop against her chest.

At 12:11, Damon entered.

At 12:38, he left alone.

Lacey stayed nearly three hours.

At 3:52, she emerged empty-handed and walked toward the main house.

That was twenty minutes before Damon dragged me onto the patio.

Grace paused the video.

“Whatever they were doing with that computer, they finished before the assault.”

Dad called local police to report the physical attack, suspected document forgery, and property theft.

No one magically arrived with handcuffs.

An officer took statements, photographed my bruises, inspected the kennel, and documented the residence.

When he asked about Dad slapping Damon, Dad told the truth.

Every detail.

Grace insisted on that.

The officer made notes.

“Domestic cases get complicated fast,” he said. “Save everything. Do not contact Mr. Bennett except through counsel if possible.”

The guesthouse door was locked.

Because Dad owned the property, police permitted him to revoke Lacey’s access, but they would not search her occupied space without consent or appropriate legal authority.

Grace requested preservation instead.

That frustrated me.

Damon had been able to lock me inside a kennel in seconds.

Protecting evidence required procedure.

But procedure mattered because Damon was already building his defense around us supposedly behaving recklessly.

We could not become the people he described.

The cloud footage arrived near midnight.

Grace downloaded three copies.

My hands shook while she opened the file.

The patio appeared.

Damon dragging me.

My blanket falling.

The shove.

The kennel.

Lacey drinking wine.

Dad arriving.

The slap.

Every second.

I expected relief.

Instead I cried.

Not because I doubted myself.

Because watching it removed the last place denial could hide.

Dad turned away.

Grace stopped the video.

“No,” I said.

“Claire—”

“Play the beginning again.”

She did.

This time I noticed something before Damon touched me.

Lacey approached from behind him.

She handed him a blue folder.

He opened it.

Inside was the emergency management authorization.

Damon read the signature page.

Then he looked at me.

Only after that did he grab my arm.

The money and the violence were not separate events.

The kennel was punishment because I had interfered with the transfer.

📖 The recovered footage proved Damon assaulted me, but its first seconds revealed why he snapped—and tied the violence directly to the forged financial scheme. 👇
