Chapter 23 - THE LAST MISSING LINK

We had motive.
Money.
Forgery materials.
Messages.
Video.
The stolen laptop.
The insider.
The lender files.
One link remained.
Who physically created the notarized Cedar Ridge document?
Damon denied it.
Nora denied it.
Lacey denied it.
Evelyn’s seal was stolen, but possession inside Damon’s case did not prove who stamped the final page.
Grace did not want one loose thread to become the defense’s favorite doorway.
The answer came from paper.
Not technology.
Evelyn used specialized embossed notarial certificates purchased in numbered batches.
The forged document carried one of her certificates.
She checked inventory.
Three sheets were missing.
The serial sequence showed exactly when they vanished.
During Damon’s visit.
Still circumstantial.
Then the building manager found archived elevator footage.
Damon left Evelyn’s floor carrying a thin document envelope he did not have when he arrived.
Nora followed him.
In the lobby, he opened it.
She looked inside.
Her face changed.
When investigators showed Nora the footage, she stopped denying knowledge.
She had not stolen the seal.
Damon had.
She watched him remove it from the envelope later at his office.
She also watched him stamp the Cedar Ridge paper.
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
Nora cried.
“Because then I’m admitting I knew exactly what he was doing.”
“Yes,” I said.
“You did.”
She covered her face.
Dad sat across the room.
He did not rescue her from the silence.
Neither did I.
Nora’s final statement established the act.
The last significant mystery closed.
Damon had personally used Evelyn’s stolen seal.
He had personally created the false notarization.
He had personally stored the document with the forgery kit.
There was nothing left to uncover that would make the story morally different.
Only consequences remained.
That afternoon investigators informed Grace that the financial and forgery evidence had been referred for charging review.
No dramatic arrest in our living room.
No instant justice.
Paperwork.
Interviews.
Prosecutorial decisions.
Real process.
I preferred it.
Damon had built his power by exploiting chaos.
I wanted his downfall documented carefully enough to survive him.
Then Grace received notice from family court.
Damon was requesting temporary access to the house and direct communication with me, claiming he needed to “support his pregnant wife through a family crisis.”
I stared at the sentence.
After everything, he still expected access.
I closed the document.
“No.”
Grace nodded.
Now we were approaching the final crisis.
Damon had lost the hidden plan.

So he was coming openly for proximity.
📖 With the forgery finally traced directly to Damon, the mystery was over; the danger now was what he might do after losing every quiet method of control. 👇
