Chapter 14 - LACEY’S OFFER

Lacey contacted Grace before noon.

Not me.

That told me she was afraid.

Her message was simple:

I want to talk before Damon destroys me too.

Grace arranged the meeting in her office with both attorneys present.

Lacey arrived without the silk robe, without wine, without the smug expression she had worn beside the kennel.

She still looked dangerous.

Fear did not make her innocent.

“I want protection,” she said.

Grace folded her hands.

“You need your own lawyer.”

“I have one.”

A woman beside her nodded.

Lacey continued.

“I’ll provide records if Claire agrees not to pursue me personally.”

“No,” I said.

Her eyes snapped toward me.

“You haven’t heard what I have.”

“I don’t need to promise you anything before hearing it.”

Damon had trained everyone around him to trade under pressure.

I was finished trading blind.

Lacey’s attorney whispered to her.

Finally Lacey opened a folder.

Not blue.

Gray.

She produced copies of messages between herself and Damon.

At first they were intimate.

I did not read those.

I already knew enough.

Then the language changed.

Need 900 cleared before Charles checks London accounts.

Claire blocked land consent again.

She’s becoming a problem.

Another:

If she won’t sign, the incapacity route works.

My fingertips went cold.

Another:

Facility holds her thirty days. Baby comes. We stabilize ownership.

I looked up.

“What does stabilize ownership mean?”

Lacey’s face tightened.

“You need to ask Damon.”

“I’m asking you.”

“He believed the baby changed the trust.”

Grace leaned forward.

“How?”

Lacey glanced at her attorney.

“When Claire’s daughter is born, part of Claire’s inherited family assets become protected for the child under the Bennett generation-skipping structure.”

Dad went still.

That was true.

Grandmother’s trust created an automatic beneficial interest for my children at birth.

Damon could never touch that portion.

The closer I came to delivery, the less available money remained for him to manipulate.

That was the clock.

Not just Dad’s trip.

My pregnancy.

The kennel scene had not been random cruelty during a marriage collapsing around an affair.

I had refused to approve the sale of Cedar Ridge, a valuable parcel held through my trust.

Damon needed the sale before my daughter arrived.

He was running out of time.

Lacey pushed another page toward me.

A message from Damon sent four days earlier.

If Claire fights after delivery, we use the recordings.

“What recordings?”

Lacey looked at me.

“The ones he made when he was provoking you.”

My skin prickled.

Damon had not merely documented my distress.

May you like

He had created it.

📖 Lacey’s messages finally explained Damon’s deadline: my daughter’s birth would protect assets he desperately needed, so he was racing the baby itself. 👇
