Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF THE SLAP

Brent wanted us angry.
Grace refused to give him the satisfaction.
She read every page while Damon and Lacey waited beside the driveway.
The petition accused Dad of entering a private marital dispute, assaulting Damon, confining him in an animal structure, and threatening further violence.
It mentioned me seventeen times.
Not once did it say Damon had put me in the kennel first.
“They’re reversing the sequence,” I said.
Grace nodded.
“Because sequence matters.”
Dad’s shoulders tightened.
“I’ll tell a judge exactly what happened.”
“You will,” Grace said. “But you also slapped him.”
“He had just locked my pregnant daughter in a dog kennel.”
“I understand.”
“Will the court?”
Grace met his eyes.
“The court will care about evidence.”
We had bruises.
The scraped knee.
The treatment packet.
The forged financial documents.
But the clearest evidence of the physical sequence should have come from the patio security camera mounted above the glass doors.
Dad looked up at it.
“Pull the footage.”
The system had been installed after a string of property thefts in the neighborhood.
I had forgotten about it.
Damon hadn’t.
When Grace logged in, the afternoon timeline showed ordinary footage until 4:07.
Then nothing.
Recording resumed at 4:21.
Fourteen minutes gone.
My mouth went dry.
The attack had happened inside that gap.
Damon glanced through the glass and smiled.
He knew.
Grace checked the log.
“Deletion request came from an administrator account.”
“Whose?”
She hesitated.
“Claire’s.”
Brent tapped his watch outside.
“My client isn’t staying.”
Grace opened the door.
“You may leave.”
Dad stepped toward Damon.
I grabbed his arm.
“No.”
Dad stopped.
That mattered.
Damon saw it too.
For the first time since the kennel, I made the decision instead of reacting.
“Let him go.”
Damon straightened his cuffs.
“You’re learning.”
“No,” I said. “You’re leaving because I’m done giving you scenes you can edit.”
His face sharpened.
Lacey climbed into the sedan.
Damon paused beside me.
“Tomorrow, the board will see exactly who has lost control.”
He left.
Grace immediately called our security provider.
The administrator account listed under my name had indeed issued the deletion.
But the request had not come from my phone.
Or my laptop.
It originated from an IP address assigned to the detached guesthouse.
I looked through the window toward the far side of the lawn.
Lacey had been staying there “temporarily” for three weeks.
May you like
Another lie had just acquired an address.
📖 Damon erased the most obvious proof, but the deletion trail gave us something better than suspicion: a path directly back to Lacey. 👇
