Chapter 1 - The Paper on the Floor

Luke lifted the pot over my head before I understood what he was going to do.

The boiling water hit my hair, shoulders, back, and stomach all at once.

I screamed.

My knees slammed into the marble floor.

The empty metal pot crashed beside me.

Steam rose around my cream maternity dress as I curled both arms over my eight-month belly.

Luke stood over me in his white shirt, breathing hard.

“When are you going to give me a son?!”

I could barely hear him.

My skin burned.

My baby moved.

That was all I cared about.

I crawled toward the dining table.

My phone was there.

So were my prenatal records and handbag.

If I could reach the phone, I could call someone.

Anyone.

Luke caught up.

His shoe came down on my hand.

Pain shot through my fingers.

Then he kicked the phone across the floor.

It spun under a chair.

“Please,” I said. “Don’t hurt our baby.”

He grabbed my hair.

Pulled my face upward.

“If it’s another girl, I’ll burn both of you alive.”

Then the prenatal file slid off the table.

Pages scattered across the wet marble.

Luke looked down.

His expression changed.

Not softer.

Not ashamed.

Afraid.

One sheet had opened near his shoe.

He stared at it.

“What is this?”

I saw which page he had found.

The page I had hidden from him for three weeks.

I lunged forward.

So did he.

We fought over the file.

A folded medical sheet slipped free.

Landed between us.

Luke reached for it.

I grabbed it first and pressed it against my chest.

“You will never touch this again.”

He froze.

That was when I realized something important.

Luke was not afraid of what the paper said about the baby.

He was afraid of what it said about him.

The report had been ordered after my obstetrician noticed something unusual in my prenatal bloodwork.

Not the sex.

Not a disease.

A genetic incompatibility.

Dr. Rachel Morgan had asked whether Luke had undergone a certain fertility treatment before our marriage.

I said no.

She asked whether any embryos had ever been created under our names.

I said no.

Then she showed me a laboratory reference number connected to my pregnancy.

VANCE-MALE-04.

I had never heard of it.

Luke had.

His eyes went straight to the code.

I saw recognition.

I asked him once.

“Do you know what that number means?”

He denied it.

Too fast.

Then footsteps sounded outside the open front door.

Not police.

Our neighbor, Mrs. Keller, had heard my scream.

Luke grabbed my arm.

“Put that paper away.”

“Why?”

“You don’t understand.”

That was almost funny.

I understood enough.

My husband had been terrorizing me for months over the sex of our unborn child.

But the prenatal file suggested this pregnancy had been medically manipulated before I ever conceived.

Mrs. Keller appeared at the doorway.

She saw the water.

The broken dishes.

Me on the floor.

Luke stepped back.

“Caroline fell.”

I laughed through tears.

Mrs. Keller did not believe him.

She called 911.

Luke moved toward the scattered papers.

I covered them with my body.

Then one page slid toward Mrs. Keller.

She picked it up before he could.

It was not the folded sheet.

It was the requisition form.

Ordering physician:

Dr. Adrian Cole.

I knew that name.

Luke’s fertility specialist.

The doctor he claimed he had seen only once, years before we met.

Mrs. Keller read the date.

“Caroline... this was ordered five years ago.”

Five years.

Luke and I had been married three.

The prenatal record connected my current pregnancy to a laboratory order made two years before I even knew him.

That was the first Information Bomb.

**My unborn child’s prenatal file was linked to a fertility order Luke created two years before we met.**

*I thought Luke was hiding the sex of our baby, but the next hospital record showed he had planned something about this pregnancy long before I became his wife.*
