Chapter 7 - The Other Baby

The law was complicated.
My goal was not to claim a pregnant woman’s body.
It was to protect the future child and stop the fraud.
Sophia Cole had been deceived too.
She thought intended parents were Luke and Caroline with informed consent.
Her contract paid through Beatrice.
She wanted to continue pregnancy.
That was her choice.
I respected it.
Then custody after birth became the issue.
The contract named Luke and me.
My signature forged.
Sophia did not want Luke involved after learning the truth.
Neither did I.
Maya filed to invalidate intended-parent contract and establish temporary neonatal guardianship plan after birth.
No ownership language.
No treating baby like property.
That mattered.
Then Luke learned Sophia was pregnant with a boy.
His lawyer requested paternity recognition.
Of course.
That male child could still satisfy the trust.
Henry’s suspension petition became urgent.
Then Beatrice resurfaced.
She had flown back to Phoenix.
She was not arrested yet because evidence review was ongoing.
She called Sophia directly.
Offered $1 million to move to Florida.
Sophia recorded it.
Beatrice said:
“That boy belongs to the Hayes family.”
That sentence became evidence.
Then Sophia refused.
Beatrice threatened breach of contract.
Contract was fraudulent.
Empty threat.
Then federal prosecutors charged Beatrice.
She surrendered.
Calm.
No apology.
Then another twist.
Genetic testing showed the fetus was not genetically Luke’s.
What?
Maternal match to me.
Paternal mismatch.
The embryo label had been switched.
Whose paternal DNA?
Dr. Cole had stored multiple samples.
Comparison matched Henry Hayes.
Luke’s father.
I stared at him.
Henry looked horrified.
He had banked sperm years earlier before cancer treatment.
Someone used it.
Then maternal-paternal relationship:
My egg + Henry’s sperm.
That made fetus biologically mine and Henry’s.
Not Luke’s.
Why create that embryo?
It had not been in the original four.
A fifth embryo.
Created secretly.
Who ordered?
Beatrice.
Why?
If Luke failed to produce heir, Henry himself could father another direct son.
A child legally younger than Luke but genetically Henry’s.
Succession reset.
Beatrice wanted a new male child tied directly to Henry.
Then she needed a maternal source.
Mine.
Because the spouse-condition did not apply to Henry’s branch? Trust amendment allowed “recognized maternal family member.”
Complex.
But she believed it worked.
Then Henry nearly collapsed.
He had never consented.
His stored sample had been stolen too.
For once, he and I stood on the same side as victims of reproductive misuse.
Then full embryo inventory found all creation records.
Beatrice had built backup paths for everyone.
Luke + Caroline.
Henry + Caroline.
Potential surrogate.
Multiple sons.
All for trust control.
I thought Beatrice’s obsession centered on Luke—but she was willing to replace her own son with a new child genetically fathered by her husband.
May you like
**Sophia’s fetus was not Luke’s son at all—it was Henry Hayes’s biological son, created from my stolen egg and Henry’s stored sperm without either of our consent.**
*The hidden trust amendment explained why Beatrice considered that child more valuable than Luke himself.*
