Chapter 3 - The Heir Clause

The clinic file included a legal attachment.

My goal was to find out why Luke’s embryo sex mattered financially.

The attachment came from Hayes Family Holdings.

Private trust.

Clause:

If Luke Hayes produces a biological male heir before age thirty-six, controlling shares transfer to his branch.

If not, control passes to his older sister, Rebecca Hayes.

Luke was thirty-five.

Deadline:

Four months.

My daughter threatened his succession.

That explained the panic.

But not the violence.

Then the trust valuation came in.

$62 million.

Luke had not been screaming about “legacy.”

He had been screaming about money and control.

Then another line:

Child must be biologically related to spouse at time of birth.

That explained why he used my tissue.

A donor child would not qualify.

He needed a male embryo created from Luke and me.

Without asking me.

Then my mother said something.

“Your father met a Hayes lawyer years ago.”

My father had died five years earlier.

Same year Luke created the embryos.

Why would my father know the Hayes family?

She found an old letter.

My father wrote:

Caroline must never be involved in the Hayes succession arrangement.

The date was six weeks before his death.

I had never seen it.

Then investigators checked his death.

Car accident.

No suspicious evidence yet.

But the timing mattered.

Then my mother admitted my father knew Dr. Cole through the hospital pathology board.

He discovered some research tissue was being sold to fertility companies.

He threatened to expose it.

Then he died.

Maybe coincidence.

Maybe not.

We did not force the conclusion.

Then Dr. Morgan found an email in the old clinic archive.

From Luke to Dr. Cole:

M-17 confirmed?

Cole:

Yes. Her father is becoming difficult.

Luke:

Handle it.

The word “handle” chilled me.

What did Luke mean?

He claimed through his lawyer it meant handle the paperwork.

Maybe.

Then another email:

Luke:

I need the embryos before Rebecca’s attorney finds out.

That proved Luke was actively involved.

Then police searched the villa.

In Luke’s study they found the Hayes trust, fertility records, and photographs of me from before we met.

Photos outside my law school graduation.

At a coffee shop.

At my first job.

He had been watching me.

Not romantically.

Strategically.

Then a private investigator invoice.

Client:

Luke Hayes.

Subject:

Caroline Reed.

Objective:

Confirm health, fertility potential, family history.

My marriage had started with surveillance.

I thought Luke had become controlling after marriage—but the files showed he selected me because my genetic material had already been used to create embryos.

**Luke had investigated me before our first date because he already possessed embryos made from my stolen reproductive tissue.**

*The investigator’s final report showed the one reason Luke decided marriage—not just an embryo transfer—was necessary.*
