Chapter 12 - The Thirty-Minute Buffer

Margaret's lie bought us less time than she realized.
While she described me as confused and unstable, Brandon walked toward his office with the USB.
Nora caught my eye.
Now.
We moved through the side entrance and into the pantry corridor.
I could not run.
Every step was a negotiation with pain.
Nora kept one arm around my waist and guided me past the kitchen before anyone noticed.
The service cabinet stood behind a narrow door beside the pantry shelves.
The brass key turned the lock.
Inside were network switches, alarm modules, and a compact black recorder with four status lights.
One light blinked amber.
"Emergency cache," Nora whispered.
A tiny display showed three files awaiting synchronization.
COURTYARD_IMPACT_1517.
BALCONY_EVENT_1516.
PANTRY_AUDIO_1440.
I stared at the third line.
"Pantry audio?"
Nora's face changed.
"That's when I heard Brandon on the phone."
The system had recorded more than she knew.
A wall-mounted service screen woke when Nora pressed the side button.
It requested an administrator passcode.
"We don't have it," she said.
I remembered the hidden compartment.
My father's signed instruction.
The trust documents.
The way he had distrusted digital systems enough to keep physical duplicates.
Then I remembered something I had seen for years without thinking about it: a small metal label on the study key stamped 0427.
I entered 0-4-2-7.
The screen unlocked.
Nora exhaled.
"Your father."
"Apparently."
I opened the first file.
The courtyard image appeared.
Shaky.
Partial.
But clear enough.
My body came over the balcony railing.
The phone spun beside me.
Then I hit the pavement.
I looked away before impact.
Nora did not.
"Oh my God."
"Play the balcony file."
The image showed Brandon behind me.
Both hands on my shoulders.
His arms extending.
My body moving backward.
There was no slip.
No stumble.
No ambiguity.
He pushed me.
The microphone had been disabled, but the image was enough.
My knees weakened.
I had known what happened.
Seeing it from outside myself was different.
Nora steadied me.
"We have him."
"Not yet."
I pointed to the third file.
"Open the pantry audio."
She touched it.
A progress wheel appeared.
Then a warning flashed.
REMOTE ADMINISTRATOR HAS SCHEDULED CACHE PURGE.
Time remaining: 06:42.
"Six minutes," Nora said.
I looked for export options.
The service screen offered only one: COPY TO REMOVABLE MEDIA.
The slot beneath the recorder was empty.
Our USB was in Brandon's office safe.
Nora pulled out her staff phone.
"He deleted the photos, but the phone still works. I can record the screen."
"Do it."
She started recording the balcony clip with the phone's camera.
A shadow filled the pantry doorway.
Brandon.
His eyes moved from Nora's phone to the service screen.
Then to the countdown.
"Give me that phone," he said.
Nora backed away.

Brandon stepped inside and locked the pantry door behind him.
