Chapter 15 - Page Seventeen

Caleb kept one hand on the red box and studied the room as if deciding who still belonged to his side.

Margaret stood nearest him. Brandon had moved away from both of them. Nora remained beside me, her staff phone recording.

"Emma, you need medical attention," Caleb said.

"After you open the box."

His eyes dropped toward Brandon's jacket pocket.

"Where's the USB?"

Brandon turned. "How do you know about the USB? I never told you."

Caleb paused.

Margaret stepped in. "I did."

The lie arrived too late.

I raised Nora's phone. "We recovered the pantry recording."

Caleb's fingers tightened on the lid.

"The voice that told Brandon the incapacity clause was cleaner than a death certificate," I added.

Margaret looked at Caleb. "You said the cache was deleted."

Brandon stared at both of them. "So it was you."

Caleb's expression cooled. "I accessed a system I was authorized to access."

"After I pushed her," Brandon snapped.

Silence.

He heard his own admission too late. Nora's phone was still recording.

Caleb exhaled. "You really are your mother's son."

"Open the box," I said.

He lifted the lid.

Inside were the original trust documents, the villa deed, a notarized amendment packet, and a small black digital recorder.

I opened the amendment. My forged signature was on the final page, but this copy carried a witness certification the scan on my shattered phone had not shown.

The witness was Nora Bell.

Nora went white. "I never signed that."

Margaret almost smiled. "Then prove it."

Nora reached for the page, but Caleb pulled it back too quickly.

"No one takes anything until we understand what happened today."

"We understand enough," I said.

His eyes hardened. "No, Emma. You understand the part you were meant to find."

My stomach tightened. "Meant to find?"

Before he answered, the security speakers chimed.

The interrupted remote session had restored one pending media file from the emergency cache.

Caleb's calm broke.

"Turn the system off."

"Play it," I told Nora.

She opened the restored file on the foyer console. Only audio appeared, timestamped 2:38 p.m.

Brandon's voice came first.

"She's on her way."

Then Caleb's voice, unmistakable now.

"Keep her on the balcony until Margaret confirms the documents are ready."

Margaret stared at him. "That isn't what you told me."

The recording continued.

"If Emma signs, use the amendment," Caleb said. "If she doesn't, the fall triggers incapacity and the doctor certifies confusion."

Then a third voice entered.

A woman.

Not Margaret.

I had never heard her before.

"The USB doesn't matter if she never learns who the ledger actually belongs to."

Even Caleb went still.

I looked at him. "Who is that?"

He said nothing.

The woman spoke once more.

"Brandon and Margaret are expendable, but Emma must never see page seventeen."

My eyes dropped to the amendment packet. Sixteen numbered pages were visible beneath Caleb's thumb.

Behind them, one thin sheet had been folded into the binding.

Page seventeen.

Caleb saw me see it.

He ripped the sheet free and backed toward the door.

Brandon blocked him. Margaret reached for the page. Nora kept recording.

And I understood that the two people who had thrown me off the balcony were not the people at the top of the plan.
