Chapter 8 - I Left Richard Without Asking Julian to Save Me

Richard thought Julian Sterling would become my solution.
He was wrong.
I didn’t ask Julian for money.
I didn’t ask for a job.
I didn’t ask him to destroy Bennett Hospitality.
I filed for separation.
I moved with Lily into a small two-bedroom apartment near her preschool.
I returned to restaurant work immediately.
Not glamorous.
But paid.
Mine.
Then Julian called.
“I have an opening in operations.”
“No.”
“You’re qualified.”
“I know.”
“Then why no?”
“Because I don’t want the first independent decision of my life to be accepting a rescue from a billionaire who owes my grandmother an apology.”
Silence.
Then Julian laughed softly.
“Eleanor would’ve liked you.”
“Don’t use your wife to flatter me.”
“Fair.”
I kept my restaurant job.
Then applied elsewhere on my own.
A hospitality group in Huntington hired me as an assistant operations manager.
Real salary.
Benefits.
My name on payroll.
The first direct deposit made me cry in my car.
Not because it was huge.
Because nobody could call it helping the family.
Meanwhile, Richard’s company suffered.
Sterling suspended contracts.
Two other corporate clients requested audits.
The Bennett line of credit tightened.
Richard called.
“Thirty people could lose jobs.”
“Then open your books.”
“It’s not that simple.”
“It is exactly that simple.”
He hated me for saying it.
Then Olivia called.
“You think because Julian recognizes your little ring you’re suddenly somebody?”
I looked at Lily sleeping beside me.
“No.”
“Then what do you think you are?”
“Someone who left.”
Silence.
That frightened her more than anger.
For years, Olivia’s power depended on people remaining in the room.
Richard.
Vanessa.
Employees.
Me.
Leaving broke the rules.
Then she said:
“Your grandmother tried to destroy my children’s future too.”
“No.”
“You don’t know.”
“I read her letters.”
Silence.
“She tried to give you a chance.”
Olivia hung up.
The next morning, Vanessa contacted me.
Not to threaten me.
To ask for a meeting.
She had found something in Olivia’s private safe.
Current documents.
Not thirty-year-old history.
May you like
And according to Vanessa, Richard had never seen them.
For the first time, my sister-in-law looked more afraid of her mother than of losing the company.
