Chapter 9 - Olivia Had Been Taking Money From Her Own Children Too

Vanessa brought bank statements.

Bennett Hospitality had been paying Olivia a salary.

Normal.

It also paid rent to a property company she owned.

Possible.

Consulting fees.

Management distributions.

Again, potentially legitimate.

Then Vanessa found unauthorized transfers from company reserves.

Approximately $310,000 over six years.

Some categorized as vendor advances.

Others temporary loans.

Most never repaid.

“Where did it go?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Mom’s investment account.”

I stared.

“You’re telling me she was stealing from Sterling and then from her own company?”

“We don’t know if it legally counts as stealing. She controls part of Bennett Hospitality.”

Good correction.

Ownership mattered.

But hiding transfers from co-owners mattered too.

“Does Richard know?”

“No.”

“Why tell me?”

Vanessa started crying.

“Because I’m tired.”

That surprised me.

She had spent her entire adult life working under Olivia.

Every questionable invoice was explained as sophisticated billing.

Every transfer was “cash management.”

Every concern became betrayal.

Then Vanessa admitted something ugly.

“I knew your work was underpaid.”

I stared.

“I knew you were doing management work.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Because if you got paid properly, there would be less money for distributions.”

At least she told the truth.

“And the birthday video?”

Her face reddened.

“I wanted you humiliated.”

“Why?”

“Because Mom spent years saying you thought you were better than us.”

I almost laughed.

“I served food at your parties.”

“I know.”

“Where exactly was the superiority?”

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I don’t know anymore.”

That was how inherited resentment worked.

Olivia assigned motives to me.

Everyone reacted to the version she described.

Then Vanessa handed me one more statement.

A $95,000 transfer from Bennett Hospitality to a private account.

Three weeks before Lily’s birthday.

Recipient:

Richard Vance.

I stared.

“What is this?”

Vanessa looked confused.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

Richard had received almost one hundred thousand dollars shortly before humiliating me publicly.

I called him.

“Where did the ninety-five thousand come from?”

Silence.

“Richard?”

He said:

“Mom.”

“For what?”

Another pause.

“A house.”

My stomach tightened.

“What house?”

He had put a down payment on a condo.

Not for us.

For himself.

Three weeks before telling me I had nothing.

My husband had already been preparing somewhere else to live.
