Chapter 13 - The Missing Thirty Billion

The hidden account existed outside all normal Escalante structures.

No board oversight.

No public record.

No employee protection.

Money had entered it for twenty-five years.

Seized pensions.

Fraudulent debt transfers.

Political payments.

International contracts.

Thirty billion dollars vanished before I activated the freeze.

Marcus traced the transfer through eleven countries.

The final destination belonged to the Rafael Escalante Humanitarian Foundation.

Its director was Samuel Grant.

I confronted him inside the boardroom.

“You moved the money.”

“Yes.”

“To yourself?”

“To restitution trusts.”

Elena examined the records.

“He is telling most of the truth.”

“Most?”

“Twenty-five billion was distributed into protected claims funds.”

“For victims?”

“Yes.”

“The remaining five billion?”

Samuel looked toward the window.

“Missing.”

“Who took it?”

“We believe Isabella.”

My mother.

Again.

I visited her in federal custody.

She sat behind glass.

Calm.

Tired.

“Did you take the money?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To build escape networks.”

“For yourself?”

“For women trapped by men like Rafael.”

She funded false identities.

Safe houses.

Relocation systems.

Some women survived because of her.

Some money disappeared into private operations.

“You stole from one group of victims to help another.”

“Yes.”

“You became Dad.”

Her face hardened.

“No.”

“You decided your cause mattered more than everyone else’s consent.”

She looked away.

The resemblance finally reached her.

“How much remains?”

“Four hundred million.”

“Give me the access codes.”

She hesitated.

Then did.

I transferred the money into Elena’s restitution structure.

My mother watched from behind the glass.

“I will testify truthfully against you.”

“I know.”

“I will not protect you.”

“I know.”

“Do you want me to forgive you?”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

I waited.

“But I know I have no right to ask.”

It was the first honest thing she had given me.

Outside, Samuel waited.

“The final control vote is scheduled.”

“I do not want the company.”

“You need control long enough to change it.”

“And afterward?”

May you like

“That is your decision.”

For the first time, someone spoke those words without hiding a condition.
