Chapter 19 - My Mother’s Sentence

Isabella pleaded guilty.

Manslaughter.

Fraud.

Identity crimes.

Conspiracy.

The judge sentenced her to eighteen years.

Before sentencing, she asked to speak.

She did not defend herself.

She did not describe herself as a protector.

She said:

“I spent my life fighting a controlling man until I became someone who controlled everyone around me. My daughter paid for my anger. So did Brenda, Celeste, Andrew, Margaret and people whose names I never learned.”

Then she looked at me.

“I loved Mariana.”

She paused.

“But love without respect became another form of possession.”

It was the closest thing to truth our family had ever spoken in public.

I visited her once after sentencing.

She sat behind glass.

“Are you happy?” she asked.

“Sometimes.”

“That is more than I expected.”

“I am not coming every week.”

“I know.”

“I may not forgive you.”

“I know.”

“But I do not want to spend my life hating you.”

Her face folded.

She pressed one hand against the glass.

I did not mirror it.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

But I stayed until visiting hours ended.

Outside the prison, Elena waited beside my car.

She carried a sealed envelope.

“Your father left one final message.”

“I thought we opened them all.”

“This one could only be released after the company left family control.”

I stared at the envelope.

Even dead, Rafael had found another condition.

I almost threw it away.

Instead, I opened it.

Inside was a memory card and one handwritten sentence.

Mariana, the only inheritance I could never control was the woman you chose to become.
