Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Without a Throne

The final board meeting was public.

Employees filled the gallery.

Former pension holders watched online.

No hidden doors.

No sealed agreements.

Andrew appeared by video from federal custody.

Margaret attended with her attorney.

Brenda sat beside Celeste.

Isabella remained in detention.

Samuel sat at the far end of the table.

Elena sat beside me.

The board expected me to accept permanent control of Escalante Holdings.

Instead, I placed four resolutions before them.

First, convert controlling shares permanently into employee and victim ownership.

Second, create an independent restitution fund.

Third, remove every family member from automatic succession.

Fourth, dissolve all secret marital, biometric and coercive control agreements.

Several directors objected.

One threatened to resign.

I told him he was free to leave.

Andrew spoke from the screen.

“You are destroying your inheritance.”

“No,” I said. “I am ending yours.”

“You think employees can run an empire?”

“They already did. You only stood in front of cameras.”

Margaret requested permission to speak.

She admitted orchestrating the necklace accusation.

She submitted every remaining Hale document.

Her family would receive restitution under the same rules as everyone else.

Brenda waived any claim to her revoked eight-hundred-million-dollar trust.

She requested that the money support children hidden through false identities.

Samuel resigned before the vote.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because no one who helped build the cage should control what replaces it.”

The resolutions passed.

Not unanimously.

But decisively.

Escalante Industries ceased to be a family empire.

The mansion was listed for sale.

The private jet was liquidated.

Fraudulently acquired artwork was returned.

Thousands of former employees entered the restitution process.

For the first time, losing control felt like freedom.
