Chapter 15 - The Daughter Without a Name

The document was real.

My parents had never completed my legal adoption after a hospital error changed my birth records.

Isabella had given birth under a false surname while hiding from Rafael’s enemies.

My father raised me.

Loved me in his own controlling way.

But legally, I was not recorded as his daughter.

Andrew’s lawyers argued that every trust right I exercised was invalid.

The contingency agreement might collapse.

The asset freeze might reverse.

The employee transfer might be voided.

Elena examined the original records.

“There is another problem.”

“What?”

“Your biological father is listed under a sealed code.”

“Rafael was not my father?”

She looked at me carefully.

“No.”

The truth struck strangely.

After everything else, I almost laughed.

“Who was he?”

Elena opened a file.

Charles Hale.

Margaret’s father.

The man Rafael destroyed.

The man accused of threatening Brenda.

The man who died by suicide.

I was biologically a Hale.

Andrew’s cousin by blood.

Margaret’s half-sister.

Isabella had been involved with both men.

She gave me to Rafael after Charles became dangerous.

Rafael raised the daughter of his enemy as his own.

Not entirely from love.

Not entirely from revenge.

Nothing in our family existed for one reason.

Margaret learned the truth from prison.

She requested to speak with me.

Through the glass, she stared at my face.

“My father was yours.”

“Yes.”

“You received Rafael’s life while I inherited Charles’s ruin.”

“I received a cage decorated differently.”

She looked down.

For the first time, there was no hatred in her expression.

Only exhaustion.

Andrew’s lawyers believed the discovery would return Escalante control to him.

But Elena found one handwritten clause in Rafael’s original trust.

Mariana shall inherit not by blood, adoption or marriage, but by designation of personhood.

My father had anticipated the legal problem.

He had chosen me explicitly.

Not as daughter.

As Mariana.

Andrew’s final challenge failed.

The employee transfer remained valid.

The judge upheld the contingency protocol.

But the discovery changed something inside me.

I was not the biological center of either family.

May you like

I was the result of their war.

That meant I did not owe either dynasty survival.
