Chapter 11 - Before Grant
The file unsettled me.
My goal was to know whether my relationship had been engineered from both sides.
Arthur and Thomas met six years earlier at an infrastructure ethics conference.
I was working as corporate compliance counsel at a smaller firm then.
Thomas showed Arthur one of my published articles on related-party transactions.
Arthur wrote:
She sees structures clearly.
Then future director reserve.
No contact with me.
Then Grant and I met a year later at a museum fundraiser.
Was Arthur involved?
Guest list showed Grant attended because Vanessa’s father sponsored table.
I attended with my firm.
No matchmaker.
No arranged seating.
We met by chance.
Then Grant texted a friend that night:
Met someone terrifyingly smart.
That made me laugh despite everything.
Then three weeks later, Arthur learned we were dating.
He told Thomas.
Thomas panicked.
He wrote:
This complicates everything.
Arthur:
Or improves it.
Thomas:
Do not use them.
Arthur:
Agreed.
So fathers did not arrange.
They later built safeguards around relationship.
That mattered.
Something had been ours.
Then Grant’s early messages to me were real.
No financial plan yet.
When did strategy enter?
After Arthur died and Grant inherited directly.
Debt pressure.
Eleanor influence.
Then marriage already underway.
So Grant did not marry me from start purely for shares.
But after engagement, he began seeing financial advantages.
Then he hid them.
That distinction mattered.
Then his honeymoon report to Eleanor still awful.
But initial relationship real.
Then Richard said:
“Truth being mixed is why it hurts.”
Yes.
Then my father’s future director reserve account?
He wanted me compensated if I joined reform project later.
Not inheritance.
Then after marriage, he abandoned plan to avoid conflict.
Then Arthur and Thomas pivoted to independent governance.
Then Grant learned this.
He said:
“So Dad didn’t choose Clara over me.”
“No,” Richard answered. “He tried to stop choosing family at all.”
That was key.
Then Grant signed final governance reform without contest.
Then our divorce mediation.
He offered me mansion.
I declined.
Property division under prenup and fraud adjustments.
I kept my own assets.
He kept diminished but significant wealth.
Then he agreed to restitution.
Then criminal plea:
Then Vanessa moved out.
She faced own case.
Then she wrote me apology.
I did not answer.
Then she asked to testify in Eleanor appeal.
Fine.
Then one personal twist.
I was pregnant?
Then Eleanor’s financial empire dismantled.
Then Michael Mercer’s paternity to Grant created inheritance claims? Arthur legally acknowledged, so no.
Then Michael asked Grant for relationship.
Grant refused initially.
Later maybe.
Then one unresolved question:
Why did Eleanor choose Arthur if Grant was Michael’s child?
Personal.
Not central.
Then Richard found Eleanor’s old diary through probate.
She loved Arthur but had affair during separation.
Arthur forgave.
Then later used secret to control Michael.
Again.
Then one entry:
Arthur knows. He loves Grant more for choosing him.
Complex.
Then why hide from Grant? Arthur thought blood did not matter.
Eleanor thought it did politically.
Diary contained a line:
Thomas knows Grant is Michael’s son. He says Clara must never be told until she is safe.
My father knew before I did.
Why wait?
Because revealing could destabilize Grant while I was inside marriage and increase danger.
He planned disclosure only after financial protections.
Then I understood my father kept one huge truth from me too.
Not malicious.
Protective paternalism.
Still secrecy.
