Chapter 12 - What My Father Chose
I wanted to be angry at Thomas.
My goal was to understand his reasoning without automatically forgiving it.
His notes:
If Clara learns Grant is Mercer’s son before Arthur’s trust is secured, Eleanor may accelerate vendor alliance and isolate her.
Then:
Tell her once her shares are independently protected.
He planned to tell me.
Never got there.
Then one line:
I hate keeping this from her.
That helped.
Did not erase.
Then I thought about all the people in my life saying, “I protected you.”
Eleanor used it to justify control.
Grant used it to justify concealment.
Arthur used it to justify secrecy around paternity.
My father used it too.
Different motives.
Same removal of my choice.
Then Richard admitted he agreed with Thomas.
“I thought he was right.”
“Were you?”
“I don’t know.”
Honest.
Then I said:
“You should have told me after Dad died.”
“Yes.”
That was first time I was angry at Richard.
He accepted.
Then why didn't he?
Because he feared Grant’s instability and lacked full proof.
Again.
Caution became delay.
Then Richard offered resignation as my counsel due conflict.
Then I removed Richard from decision role voluntarily.
Boundaries.
Then independent attorney reviewed all documents.
No hidden conflict.
Then my father’s protective clause validated.
Then my shares remained independent trust for ten years.
Economic benefit mine.
Voting independent.
I accepted.
Then I withdrew from WestGate governance entirely.
He asked to meet before surrender.
I agreed in lawyer office.
He said:
“I used your father’s silence as proof everyone lies.”
I said:
“Everyone does lie sometimes.”
He looked surprised.
“That doesn’t make what you did normal.”
Then:
“You wanted reasons to stop checking yourself.”
He nodded.
Then he apologized for slap.
Again.
No demand.
Then asked:
“Was any of us real?”
I said:
“Some of it was. That’s why it matters.”
Then he surrendered.
Then Vanessa testified at Eleanor appeal.
Appeal denied mostly.
Then Michael Mercer faced fraud sentence.
Then he wrote Grant.
No response.
Then Arthur’s legal recognition as father remained emotionally important.
Then independent board sold no company.
Instead reforms.
Then worker pension fully restored through recovered funds and land asset.
Then Hayes Meridian joined joint venture under arm’s-length terms.
Not family merger.
Then my father’s dream partially realized.
Then one audit found Richard’s briefcase had an old GPS tracker.
Who installed?
Thomas.
He wanted location monitored if evidence moved.
Trace message through prepaid phone.
Owner?
Mansion staffer Sarah Doyle.
Why?
She had seen Vanessa return from gas station and overheard Eleanor say Envelope Two contained Arthur statement.
She feared confrontation.
She sent warning anonymously.
Why not identify?
Fear job.
Then she came forward.
That resolves.
Then she said she also saw Grant burn envelope.
Then no mystery.
Richard gives final audit showing Thomas's own company purchased assets from WestGate cheaply years ago under Arthur; Thomas later recognized conflict and wanted reform. So both families benefited. Clara must confront own side.
