Chapter 1 - The Man at the Door

Julian's fist closed in my hair before I could understand why he was reaching for me.
One second I was standing beneath the crystal chandelier in my white wedding dress, trying to keep my voice steady. The next, my knees slammed against the marble floor.
Pain shot through my scalp.
Then came the spray.
A freezing chemical mist struck my face, flooding both eyes.
I screamed.
The industrial-strength disinfectant burned so violently that I couldn't tell whether my eyes were open or closed. I threw both hands over my face and twisted away, but Julian caught the back of my dress.
"YOU'RE NOTHING BUT A PIECE OF TRASH!" he roared. "GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!"
My crushed bouquet lay beneath my elbow.
White roses, flattened into the marble.
My bridal veil had twisted around my shoulder.
Behind Julian, Evelyn Vance watched me from the base of the sweeping staircase.
My new mother-in-law wore the same dark blue evening gown she'd worn while smiling for wedding photographs less than an hour earlier. Diamonds glittered at her throat.
She wasn't horrified.
She was smiling.
I tried to crawl.
I had no idea where I was going because I couldn't see.
Julian seized a fistful of my dress and dragged me backward.
The fabric scraped across the marble.
My hip struck the floor.
"You bastard!" I screamed. "Do you want to kill me?"
He threw me down again.
I heard the plastic bottle shake.
Then Evelyn's heels approached.
"Spray her again," she said with a cold laugh. "Trash like this doesn't deserve to be my daughter-in-law."
That sentence broke something inside me that the pain hadn't.
Three hours earlier, Evelyn had adjusted my veil herself.
She'd called me beautiful.
She'd kissed my cheek in front of the photographer.
Now she wanted her son to blind me.
When Julian moved closer, I lunged toward the sound and caught his wrist with both hands.
He cursed.
We struggled over the bottle.
I dug my nails into his skin.
For the first time that night, he sounded surprised.
"You little—"
He shoved me.
My shoulder hit the marble.
Then everything stopped.
Not the burning.
Not my breathing.
Julian stopped.
Silence dropped through the foyer so suddenly I could hear the faint hum of the chandelier above us.
His grip disappeared from my dress.
I heard one of his shoes slide backward.
Evelyn said, "Julian?"
No answer.
"Julian, what are you looking at?"
Another pause.
Then Evelyn turned.
I knew because her diamonds made a faint clicking sound against the neckline of her gown.
The woman who had just ordered her son to spray chemicals into my eyes made a sound I had never heard from her before.
A tiny gasp.
Pure fear.
I pushed myself onto one elbow.
"What?" I whispered.
Nobody answered me.
Julian took another step backward.
His voice came out thin and broken.
"...I-it can't be..."
Then a man's voice came from the open front entrance.
It was older.
Weak.
But unmistakably furious.
"Get your hands off my daughter-in-law."
Julian whispered one word.
"Dad."
Arthur Vance was supposed to be three hundred miles away in a private rehabilitation facility.
According to Evelyn, he had suffered another neurological episode two weeks before our wedding.
According to Julian, he could barely speak.
According to the Vance family, he had been too sick even to receive visitors.
Yet Arthur Vance was standing in the doorway of his own mansion.
And from the way Julian and Evelyn had gone silent, his return was not the miracle they wanted anyone to believe it was.
I heard something drop near the entrance.
Paper.
Then Arthur said, "Sophia, don't let them touch the blue envelope."
Evelyn moved first.
Her heels struck the marble fast.
"No!"
Arthur shouted.
A chair scraped.
Something heavy hit the floor.
I heard Evelyn snatch something up.
Then Arthur's voice disappeared completely.
"Arthur?" I called.
No answer.
Julian rushed past me.
I heard him kneel.
"Dad?"
Evelyn hissed, "Don't just stand there."
I forced my burning eyes open a fraction.
Everything was white and red and blurred.
But I saw enough.
Arthur Vance was lying just inside the doorway.
Evelyn stood over him.
And clutched against her dark blue gown was a thick blue envelope.
She looked at Julian.
Julian looked at me.
For the first time since he'd dragged me across the marble, my husband wasn't angry.
He was terrified.

And then Evelyn slid the envelope behind her back.
