Chapter 15 - The Man My Father Refused to Name

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The frozen image remained on the monitor.

My father.

Peter.

Arthur.

Evelyn.

And one unknown man's hand wearing a gold signet ring.

I looked at Arthur.

"Who is he?"

Arthur's mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Evelyn sank slowly into the leather chair.

Julian stared at both of them.

"You know."

Arthur said, "I thought he was dead."

My skin prickled.

"Who?"

Mara moved closer to me.

Arthur looked at the monitor again.

"There were four founding investors in Northstar Meridian."

"You said it was a syndicate."

"It became one."

"Names."

He swallowed.

"William Sterling."

My father.

"Myself."

Arthur.

"Peter Caldwell."

Peter.

I waited.

"And?"

Arthur didn't answer.

Evelyn whispered, "Don't."

I turned on her.

"You ordered your son to spray chemicals into my eyes twenty minutes after I married him. You don't get to tell anyone what not to say."

She flinched.

Good.

Arthur looked at her.

Then at me.

"The fourth investor vanished before the investigation."

"Name."

"Sophia—"

"Name him."

Arthur's lips moved.

Before he could speak, the monitor beeped.

Another file had automatically queued.

The next recording began.

Same room.

Same night.

But later.

My father was alone.

He stood at Arthur's desk holding a small camera.

His face looked different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

He looked directly toward the lens.

Toward me.

My knees weakened.

"If Sophia ever sees this," he said, "then I failed."

My hand flew to my mouth.

His voice filled the study.

"I need you to understand something, sweetheart. Sterling Point was never the real inheritance."

Arthur closed his eyes.

My father continued.

"The land is a lock. The easement is the key. But the thing they want is not property."

I stepped closer to the monitor.

"What is it?" I whispered.

Of course he couldn't hear me.

"The original Northstar ledgers identify every account used to move the money."

Julian turned toward Evelyn.

She stared at the screen.

My father continued.

"I split the records into three parts. Peter has one. Arthur has one. The third was placed where nobody connected to Northstar could reach it."

My pulse hammered.

"Where?"

My father looked away from the camera.

A sound came from the old recording.

Someone approaching.

He lowered his voice.

"If Peter tells you I trusted him until the end, he's lying."

My breath stopped.

"If Arthur tells you he knew everything, he's lying too."

Arthur whispered, "William..."

My father looked into the camera again.

"But the person you must never trust is the man with the ring."

Footsteps grew louder.

My father reached toward the camera.

Then stopped.

The unknown man's voice came from outside the room.

"William."

My father went still.

The door opened.

This time the camera angle captured more.

A man stepped into view.

Gray suit.

Tall.

Back toward the camera.

Gold signet ring on his right hand.

My father looked at him.

"You were supposed to stay away from her."

The man answered.

"I did."

"Then why did you access her trust?"

My heart slammed.

Trust?

Arthur whispered, "No."

The unknown man said, "Because you've made sentiment expensive."

My father stepped closer.

"Sophia doesn't know anything."

"Then keep it that way."

"You leave her alone."

The man laughed softly.

"You still don't understand. She's the only person who can unlock the final account."

My legs nearly gave out.

Julian looked at me.

Even he seemed confused.

The final account?

I had never heard of it.

My father said, "She doesn't know the code."

"She doesn't have to."

"Then what do you need from her?"

The man turned slightly.

Not enough for the old camera to capture his full face.

But enough to show a pale scar beneath his left ear.

Arthur made a strangled sound.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

I looked between them.

"Who is he?"

Arthur whispered, "That's impossible."

The man on the recording said, "When Sophia marries, the trust changes status."

My blood went cold.

Julian stared at the monitor.

"What?"

My father stepped forward.

"No."

"Yes."

"You can't use her marriage."

"We don't need to use it."

The man paused.

"We need to control who she marries."

The study went silent.

Slowly, every person in the room looked at Julian.

He stared at the screen.

"No."

Evelyn stood.

"Julian."

"No."

He backed away.

"You told me this was about the land."

She didn't answer.

"You said Peter chose her because of Sterling Point."

Still nothing.

Julian's face changed.

For the first time all night, I saw something in him that looked almost like fear of his mother.

"What else did you know?"

Evelyn whispered, "Not enough."

The recording continued.

My father shouted, "You will stay away from my daughter."

The unknown man moved closer.

"And if she marries one of ours?"

My father froze.

One of ours.

Arthur grabbed the edge of the desk.

Mara whispered, "What does that mean?"

My father said, "She never will."

The man laughed again.

"You can't promise that."

"I can if she never meets them."

The man turned farther.

The image caught part of his jaw.

That scar.

That ring.

Then the file glitched.

Static swallowed the picture.

When it returned, the room was empty.

The timestamp jumped forward eleven minutes.

My father reentered alone.

Blood ran from his lip.

He locked the door.

Then he held something up to the camera.

A document.

I leaned closer.

The image was blurred.

But I could make out one line.

STERLING FAMILY TRUST — MARITAL SUCCESSION RIDER.

My breathing stopped.

My father spoke quickly.

"Sophia, if they get you married before you understand this document, do not sign anything connected to Sterling Point, Vance Holdings, or Northstar."

Julian whispered, "Jesus."

My father continued.

"Marriage activates a dormant provision created before you were born."

I stared at the screen.

Before I was born?

"Peter knows."

Of course.

"Arthur knows part of it."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"But neither of them knows who changed the beneficiary."

Arthur went pale.

My father lifted the document closer.

For one second the beneficiary section came into focus.

The name had been covered with correction tape.

My father said, "I found the altered page tonight."

Footsteps sounded outside the old study again.

He looked toward the door.

Then back at the camera.

"If I don't get out of here, the original is hidden in—"

The video cut.

Black screen.

"No!"

I grabbed the keyboard.

"Play it again."

Arthur tried.

The file wouldn't open.

"Again!"

"It stopped there."

I searched the folder.

Another file appeared beneath it.

A later timestamp.

Three days before my father's death.

The title contained only six words.

SOPHIA — IF HE FINDS YOU.

My hand trembled over the mouse.

Julian stepped beside me.

"Open it."

Evelyn shouted, "No!"

We all turned.

She was staring at the screen with raw terror.

Arthur said, "Why?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"Because that's not William's file."

My skin went cold.

"What?"

She pointed at the title.

"He didn't name recordings like that."

Mara asked, "Then who did?"

Before Evelyn answered, the landline on Arthur's desk rang.

Everyone froze.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Arthur stared at it.

"That line hasn't worked in months."

Four rings.

I picked up.

"Hello?"

Nothing.

Then breathing.

A man's voice.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar in a way I couldn't place.

"Sophia Sterling."

My fingers tightened around the receiver.

"Who is this?"

Across the room, Evelyn's face had turned white.

Arthur stared at the phone as if it were a weapon.

The man said, "Your father spent years making sure you never heard my voice."

My heart hammered.

"Who are you?"

A quiet laugh.

Then he said something that made Arthur stagger backward.

"Ask your husband why his mother never told him who his real father is."

Julian went completely still.

I looked at Evelyn.

She shook her head.

"No."

The voice continued.

"And before Sophia opens the next recording, Evelyn should tell everyone why the Sterling trust requires a Vance marriage."

Evelyn screamed, "Hang up!"

I didn't.

"Where are you?" I asked.

The man ignored me.

"You're all searching the wrong house."

Arthur grabbed the phone.

"Who are you?"

The man laughed.

"Arthur. Still pretending you buried me?"

Arthur's face collapsed.

He knew.

He absolutely knew.

Then the voice said one final sentence.

"Tell Sophia the gold ring belonged to her grandfather."

The call ended.

I couldn't move.

My grandfather had died before I was born.

At least that was what my father had always told me.

Arthur slowly lowered the receiver.

Julian stared at Evelyn.

"Mom."

She backed toward the wall.

"Don't."

"Who was my father?"

Her mouth trembled.

Nobody noticed the monitor at first.

The next recording had begun playing automatically.

The black screen cleared.

A younger Evelyn appeared.

Pregnant.

Standing beside my father.

And beside her was the man with the gold ring.
