Chapter 1 - THE CALL HE NEVER EXPECTED

The riding crop cracked across my upper back before I could finish drawing breath.
Pain tore through the thin fabric of my light blue dress. My body pitched forward, and both knees slammed against the polished hardwood floor.
Across the room, Vanessa laughed.
Not nervously.
Not because she was uncomfortable.
She laughed like a woman watching the final scene of a victory she had already purchased.
Adrian lowered the black riding crop and admired the way I struggled to sit upright.
“You’re nothing without my permission to breathe.”
His voice was low and controlled.
That frightened me more than shouting would have.
My wrists burned against the plastic restraints securing them behind my back. Tears blurred the white fireplace, the crystal chandelier, and the tall windows flooding the living room with afternoon light.
This was our home.
At least, it had been until Adrian brought his mistress inside and told me I no longer belonged there.
The divorce folder lay beside my bruised knee.
My name had already been printed beneath a blank signature line.
Vanessa crossed one elegant leg over the other on the cream sofa. Her fitted black satin dress caught the daylight as she leaned forward.

Something inside me became very still.
Adrian raised the crop again.
I watched his shoulder turn.
I saw his weight shift.
Before he could bring it down, I twisted away.
The crop cut through empty air.
I rolled across the floor, scraping my shoulder against the wood as I threw myself toward the phone.
Adrian lunged and caught my arm.
I drove my weight forward, slammed my shoulder against his knee, and felt his grip loosen.
My fingers closed around the phone.
The room went silent.
I lifted my tear-streaked face.
“You bought a puppet, Adrian,” I whispered. “You forgot who pulled the strings.”
His confidence flickered.
“Who the hell are you calling? Give me that phone!”
I unlocked the screen with trembling fingers and pressed the call button.
One ring.
Then a man answered.
“Elena?”
Adrian froze.
Vanessa stood slowly from the sofa.
I raised the phone to my ear and looked directly at my husband.
“Dad,” I said. “Tell him whose empire he just tried to demolish.”
The riding crop slipped from Adrian’s hand and struck the floor.

My father’s voice hardened.
“Put Adrian on the phone.”
