Chapter 13 - MY MOTHER’S RECORDED WARNING

No one moved.
My mother’s voice filled the darkened living room.
Calm.
Clear.
Alive in a way that made my chest ache.
“If this recording is playing, someone has accessed the emergency archive.”
My father gripped the chair beside him.
“Catherine.”
The recording continued.
“Richard, do not trust the documents stored under my name. Elena, if you are hearing this, I am sorry.”
Tears filled my eyes.
The voice was older than I remembered from family videos.
Weaker.
But unmistakably hers.
“I created a protected voting trust for you because I discovered irregularities inside the company. I did not know how far they reached.”
The fire crackled beneath the fireplace.
Adrian stared at the speaker grille.
My mother continued.
“A man approached me with evidence that company assets were being redirected through Grayhaven entities. He claimed he could help identify the person responsible.”
I looked at Adrian.
His face was unreadable.
“I believed him,” my mother said. “That was my mistake.”
The recording cut briefly into static.
Then her voice returned.
“I never learned his real name. But he was not working alone.”
My father closed his eyes.
The hidden speaker emitted another click.
A second voice began.
Male.
Young.
“Mrs. Whitmore, if your husband learns what you changed, he’ll undo it.”
My blood turned cold.
The voice sounded like Adrian.
Not exactly as he sounded now.
But close enough.
My mother answered.
“Richard will protect Elena.”
The man laughed softly.
“From me, perhaps. Not from the person signing his checks.”
The recording stopped.
Lights flickered back on.
The chandelier glowed.
Phone service returned.
Everyone stared at Adrian.
He shook his head.
“That voice was manufactured.”
Vanessa whispered, “It sounded like you.”
“It wasn’t.”
My father crossed the room.
The security officer did not stop him.
He stood inches from Adrian.
“Who was paying me?”
Adrian smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
My father grabbed his shirt.
For one dangerous second, I thought he would hit him.
Instead, he released Adrian and stepped away.
“I understand enough.”
Sirens sounded beyond the gates.
Adrian’s confidence wavered.
“You called the police?”
“The security team did,” my father said.
Adrian glanced toward the hallway.
He was calculating exits.
Claire noticed.
“The rear doors are covered.”
He looked at her.
“You should be more worried about yourself.”
Claire’s face tightened.
My father turned toward the speaker system.
“How did the recording activate?”
The security officer checked a control panel concealed near the fireplace.
“It was triggered remotely.”
“From where?”
“According to the system, from the Halcyon Hotel.”
My phone rang again.
Marcus.
I answered.
“Elena, get out of the house.”
“What happened?”
“I found the boxes.”
“Where?”
“Not in the storage unit. They’re on the nineteenth floor.”
“Are you inside?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa moved closer to the phone.
“Marcus, the police are here.”
“That won’t help.”
“Why?”
“Because one of the boxes contains police personnel files.”
My father’s expression hardened.
Marcus continued.
“And Elena, there’s something else.”
“What?”
“I found surveillance photographs.”
“Of whom?”
“Your mother. Your father. You.”
May you like
He inhaled sharply.
“The newest photograph was taken less than ten minutes ago from inside your living room.”
