Chapter 2 - THE MAN ADRIAN REFUSED TO HEAR

Adrian stared at my phone as if it had become a loaded weapon.

“End the call,” he ordered.

His voice was quieter now.

The cruelty had not disappeared, but something had entered beside it.

Fear.

I held the phone against my chest.

“You wanted me powerless,” I said. “Now you can explain to my father why I’m tied up on the floor.”

Vanessa’s eyes darted toward Adrian.

“You told me her father was retired.”

“He is,” Adrian snapped.

That answer was technically true.

My father had retired from public life five years earlier.

Adrian had never asked what he had retired from.

When we first met, I used my mother’s maiden name professionally. I was tired of people treating me differently once they learned who my family was.

I wanted Adrian to love me without knowing what doors my name could open.

For years, I believed he had.

My father spoke through the phone.

“Elena, are you injured?”

My throat tightened.

“I can stand.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

I looked down at my bruised knees and felt the sting across my upper back.

“Yes.”

A pause followed.

Not an empty pause.

A dangerous one.

“Is Adrian still in the room?”

“Yes.”

“Put me on speaker.”

Adrian stepped toward me.

I pressed the phone against my body and shifted away.

“Don’t touch her,” my father said.

Adrian stopped.

The phone was not on speaker.

Yet my father had heard the movement.

He had always been able to hear what other people missed.

I activated the speaker.

My father’s voice filled the luxurious room.

“Adrian, remove the restraints.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You have no authority in my home.”

“You have thirty seconds.”

Vanessa gave a short laugh, but it cracked in the middle.

“Who does he think he is?”

My father ignored her.

“Twenty-five seconds.”

Adrian crouched beside me.

His fingers trembled slightly as he reached for the plastic tie around my wrists.

I felt him notice that.

So did Vanessa.

“Why are you listening to him?” she demanded.

Adrian pulled a small knife from the side table and cut the restraint.

Blood rushed painfully back into my hands.

I brought my arms forward and rubbed my wrists.

“Stand up,” my father told me.

I pushed one palm against the floor.

My legs shook so badly that I nearly collapsed.

Adrian instinctively reached for me.

I recoiled.

His hand remained suspended between us.

For one second, something almost human crossed his face.

Then it vanished.

“Take the divorce folder,” my father said. “Take the phone. Walk out through the front entrance.”

Adrian rose.

“She’s not leaving with those documents.”

“They belong to me,” I said.

“They contain confidential financial information.”

“They contain my future.”

Vanessa moved between me and the door.

The smile had returned to her face, but it looked forced now.

“You’re not walking out until you sign.”

I looked past her toward the tall front windows.

A black sedan turned through the mansion gates.

Then another followed it.

Adrian saw them too.

His face drained of color.

My father’s voice came through the phone.

“Elena, stay where you are. The first car is mine.”

Adrian moved quickly toward the window.

The second sedan stopped behind the first.

Three more vehicles appeared at the gate.

Vanessa whispered, “You said he was retired.”

Adrian did not answer.

The front doorbell rang once.

Then someone knocked with three deliberate strikes.

My father spoke again.

“Adrian, open the door before the people behind me decide to do it themselves.”
