Chapter 2 - THE MAN ON THE PORCH

I did not open the door.

The man outside kept knocking.

He used Mark’s voice.

His rhythm.

Even the impatient scrape of one shoe against the porch boards sounded familiar.

But the video on Ethan’s hidden phone showed my mother alive, warning me away from him.

I called 911 through a second line.

The dispatcher placed patrol units two minutes out.

The porch man heard the faint radio response through the door.

He stopped knocking.

Then he said, “David, if police arrive, Ethan disappears again.”

My son gripped the back of my shirt.

I asked, “Who are you?”

“Open the door.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then footsteps moved away.

By the time police arrived, the porch was empty.

A dark SUV pulled from the end of the street before officers could block it.

The license plate belonged to Mark.

My real brother arrived twelve minutes later in another vehicle.

He looked at Ethan and began crying.

My son screamed when Mark stepped closer.

That reaction told us someone had used his face.

Detective Lena Hayes separated everyone.

The black phone taped to Ethan’s stomach contained location software, recorded audio, and one hidden folder.

Inside were videos of a man wearing Mark’s face entering a basement room.

Sometimes the face looked perfect.

Sometimes the edge of a prosthetic lifted near the ear.

The captor was a trained double.

But who was Ethan’s biological father?

A paternity test excluded me.

The result nearly stopped my heart.

I had raised him from birth.

Held Sarah’s hand through labor.

Signed every paper.

Loved every ordinary morning.

Biology changed none of that.

It changed the crime.

Mark’s test also came back negative.

A third man existed.

Then Hayes tested the dead skin beneath Ethan’s fingernails.

DNA matched Officer Daniel Reed.
